"I found Philip Nation's Habits for Our Holiness to be a thought-provoking, remarkable read. I knew it was a book about the spiritual disciplines. So I thought I knew the kind of book it would be: read your Bible daily, pray daily, praise God daily, go to church, give your money and time to the church, if you've got kids, raise them well, be kind to your neighbors and coworkers, be active in your community, etc.

I did not expect it to be both inspiring--encouraging--and challenging--penetrating. For example, here's a question from the introduction: 'What are we doing to participate in God's process of teaching others how to love Him?'

Other 'wow' sentences for me:

'The king of the universe has a deeper desire to redeem people than we can begin to imagine. Amazingly, He invites us into the work. When we love Him deeply, He will form us to mirror his heart; and He has a missionary heart.'

'When the truth lays hold of our souls, we should feel the compulsion to share it....The world should benefit from our spiritual growth.'

'You've never accidentally met anyone. Instead, God--being God--organizes your life so that you can have an effect on every person you meet.'

The approach to this 'spiritual disciplines' book is different and refreshing. It ties all the spiritual disciplines together. This is evident from the start by how he defines the term 'spiritual discipline': 'A spiritual discipline is a mental and physical act and a habit that expresses our love for God and fosters a greater display of His glory in our lives and a deeper understanding of His character and agenda.'

As you might expect, however, it does talk a lot about the Bible, about worship, about prayer, about service, about HOW to live life in a way that pursues holiness, our sanctification. He ties each chapter, each discipline, back to the world: how does that discipline impact our mission--the great commission. Every chapter it seems is about evangelism, about sharing the gospel with a world that desperately needs to hear the good news--the GREAT NEWS--that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.

For example, 'Each discipline can be used for God to form you into the likeness of Christ. Through the spiritual disciplines we are seeking to serve as He served, pray as He prayed, and submit as He submitted. The disciplines can increase our intimacy with God so that we can work to extend His reign in the lives of those around us./

"When I read non-fiction, more often than not, I will only read one chapter a day so that I can ingest and digest the information given. For a book like Habits for Our Holiness, that was a necessary strategy. Learning how others have come before me and walked the walk of faith always aids my own walk. My first tour through the Christian disciplines is Donald Whitney's Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. Both of these books offer quite the same information, but both of the books are worth reading more than once.

When I was a student getting my degree in education, one of the things we learned is how we learned--we could be visual learners (I am), auditory learners, or kinetic learners, or any combination of all of the above. In fact, we all have some degree of all three learning styles in us. I could take notes in a class and bring the notes back up in my mind when I was taking a test and read until I got to the answer I needed. Making things stick in our minds is easier when we take our own notes and read them in our own handwriting, or we read them aloud in our own voices, or we act it out with our own bodies. This in and of itself is why it's good to read the same kinds of information with more than one author.

So here's what I brought away from the chapter on Bible Study: We have to question each passage of scripture--it's like asking the teacher to explain something we don't understand.

1. How does this passage reveal God's character?

2. How does this passage reveal God's redemptive plan?

3. How did the passage apply to the original hearers? 4. How does this truth affect my relationship with Christ? 5. In what ways do I rebel against the truth in the passage? 6. What is the impact of the passage on the church?

Philip Nation has brought the disciplines together in an extremely readable way, understandable by any student of the Christian life. This is a five star book worth reading, meditating on, and digesting, simply to understand God and His word better.

About the Author

Raph Koster is a veteran game designer who has been professionally credited in almost every area of the game industry. He's been the lead designer and director of massive titles such as Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies; and he's contributed writing, art, soundtrack music, and programming to many more titles ranging from Facebook games to single-player titles for handheld consoles. He has worked as a creative executive at Sony Online and Disney Playdom, and in 2012 was honored as an Online Game Legend at the Game Developers Conference Online.

Interesting read but only part of it is about the theory of fun

Ultimately I was disappointed by this book. As I game designer I was hoping for a book with information about how to make games fun, pick game concepts that would be fun and find the fun in games. I found that the first half of this book explains the author's theory on what makes games fun at a fairly high level. I was expecting the second half of the book to flesh the theory out, give examples, show evidence and explain how to apply it. Instead the second half of this book is an essay defending video games as an art form and discussing ethics in video games. It is interesting but not particularly useful.

I was hoping for a book that would describe the various psychological theory's of fun and give examples showing how games apply these theory's to create fun. I was also hoping for an explanation why some game mechanics such as Tetris are fun to play for hours whereas others become boring quickly. The author's theory does not explain this.

I also feel that the author missed some of the things that make games fun. For example many games are built around wealth creation. The book doesn't mention this beyond a gemeral mention that most games have a reward structure.

This book is an interesting read but I am still looking for a good book offering insights into how to make fun games.

Buy it to "feel" like you're working towards something in game design, but don't buy it for any revelatory "Ah hah" moments.

As someone working, relatively new, in the industry, I have to say this book didn't really help me much, or broaden my perspective. I was hoping there would be a depth to this book that would help me gain insight on design/developing games to be more fun, however I found most of the info is either very obvious, or so broad that it doesn't really help. This is just my interpretation of course, but I've basically gobbled up as many books about game development and design as I can, and this book really left no mark on me. I think for the serious learner, there is little to be gained, if you just want an easy read around the concept of game design, and why game designers are as important as doctors, I suppose it does the trick. It's a fun and well put together book, so I feel somewhat bad for faulting it, it's sort of like ripping on a movie made for kids. I really feel it's designed to make people feel like their fast tracking their way or getting a leg up in game design, when really it's just making you feel that way. Like I said, this book wasn't for me and I don't think I could recommend to anyone who's actually serious about giving up large chunks of their social life and sanity to making games as opposed to just "knowing" about it.

Not bad, but a little short on information

As already mentioned in other reviews, the first half of this book is kind of dedicated to what makes a game actually fun, the second half is an essay defending games as an art form. I am a person that likes just plain facts, also I expect to find statements backed up by research (even if it's simple common sense research, nothing rigorous or people in white coats). This book is nothing like that, it is written in prose in a style that is more like a commentary or conversation, and the ideas are scattered along the book. The background of the author is a writer, so although his language is very rich and precise, it ultimately doesn't deliver what the title of the book promises. It doesn't delve into an actual theory of what makes a game fun, it just throws here and there ideas about his own experiences of what makes a game fun. In his defense the ideas that he does present are valuable, but unfortunately you have to extract the information little by little by flipping through many pages of the book. By the way, half of the book are illustrations, and I personally believe that half of them don't add or enrich the content. Ultimately I'm a little disappointed. The book in itself is not bad, I just think that the book could be about only 30 to 40 pages of actual information about what makes a game entertaining.

This little guide is exactly what a person wanting to get started on weight loss, really needs: Simple, feasible life-hacks, backed up by solid evidence, in a neat, compact, easy-to-read format. No need to get lost in hundreds of pages of either intimidating tech-talk or "awe-inspiring" quackery. Get it and get started in under one hour. Antonis and Fotis have really hit the spot with this one.

Value for money - Applicable tips - Evidence-based approach

Great book for people who are looking for real-life, applicable tips on how to actually lose weight. The fact that makes this book so great is that the tips are in an easy-to-digest language but still based on peer-reviewed science. Many books out there will promise outrageous things and deliver few results if any. Most of them are theoretical and don't help the reader to take the next step into implementing the knowledge she/he has spent her/his money on. This book does exactly the opposite! Best value for money loss weight book out there!

Very good and practical

What I like about the book is the no bulls*** approach. Nobody is selling any supplements and everything is written plain and simple so everybody can understand it. At the same time everything is based on science and referenced to scientific papers. What especially resonated with me were the tips how to implement the theory into the practice without becoming to stressed about it. In my opinion one of the best (can be done in real life) weight loss books.

"Soccer Freestyle Master" is another masterpiece by
Mirsad Hasic. The book describes beginning, intermediate
and advanced moves. For instance, novices are taught
the mechanics of the single foot balancer, sole lift and spin.

Intermediate level players learn pull ups and lifts with the
use of the knee. Advanced moves are depicted too. These
include the heel kick and instep lift.

The beauty of this book is that the author teaches the
importance of exercise warm-ups to achieve more
flexibility and minimize injuries during the game. Too
often beginners and even more experienced players
leave out these important steps. As a result, avoidable
injuries may occur. In addition, the author provides an
important checklist for players to follow.

Mirsad's book is a good start for anyone interested in
playing soccer safely. In addition, the beginning and
more advanced techniques are depicted at length.

Imagine that you are preparing to give the most important presentation of your life. For a week prior to the event you will be sequestered on a desert island then picked up by the cruise ship where you will make your presentation. You are informed about your audience and provided with information on the meeting room environment. However, you may only take one book with you to prepare. I recommend 100 Things Every Presenter Needs to Know About People by Susan M. Weinschenk, Ph.D. This book does an excellent job in delivering a concise, compendium of what you need to know.

As a presentation geek, I have read many of the leading authors, such as Nancy Duarte, Garr Reynolds, Bert Decker and many others. They are all strong in their own right. In comparison, Dr. Weinschenk's book gets right to the point on each of the 100 things without taking more than two or three pages to get there. It brings together a wide range of material in a small package.

The book is divided into ten sections, ranging from how people learn, getting and keeping people's attention, motivating action, listening and visual guides, environment concerns, emotion, reaction, decision-making, and crafting your prez and a 90-day improvement plan.

In each of the 100 mini-chapters, you learn how to use psychology to be a better presenter. In a pinch, you could take the handy takeaways included in each chapter as a cheat sheet reminder.

The book consolidates sometimes hard-to-find resources such as those for determining what font size to use, depending on screen size and the distance your viewers will be from the screen. You may learn research about things you thought you knew. Did you know that if your audience reads from left to right, the correct side of the screen to stand on is the left side, that is, your audience's left? You want to be the first thing your audience sees as they scan the room. Did you know that people use peripheral vision more than central vision to get the gist of your slide? It goes back to our ancestor's days on the savannah when it was critical to scan for predators.

As though the rich collection of psychological guidance weren't enough, the next to the last section of the book is a guide to actually crafting your presentation. It helps you analyze your audience, determine where they are, where you want them to be and how to get them there by outlining or storyboarding a meaningful structure.

Think that you wouldn't be interested in this book if you are not doing a lot of presentations? Many of these principles can be used in situations where you are sitting in a conference room with ten people, across the desk at a job interview or in a virtual meeting. Training developers will also find very helpful information about how adults learn and designing more effective training presentation materials.

I really enjoyed Susan approach to presentations. It was broken down in to bite size pieces and then put back together. I wish Susan would have used other examples vs her own website experience people need to be able to relate to a story so 2 -3 examples would have make this book a greater success in by book. The book reads like a rant -- there are no academic references, just only the author's opinions. Some chapters are objective, others, like the chapter on Christianity, is a rant about how much he doesn't like Christianity.

Power and Ideology in Education was first published in the same year as Bowles and Gintis' Schooling in Capitalist America and Willis' Learning to Labor. As such, it was part of a learned and exciting effort to place schooling in an inter-institutional context. Rather than focus on schooling as an autonomous institution charged with serving as an engine of thoroughgoing social reform, Karabel and Halsey's reader made clear that education was inextricably tied to other institutions, and that its potential for fostering social change had long been grossly exaggerated. Education was secondary to and served other, more powerful institutions, especially the economy.

The relentless school-bashing that began in the mid-1970's had little or nothing to do with the quality of public education. Instead, changes in labor markets fostered by out-sourcing, down-sizing, internationalization, and ongoing technological developments sharply reduced the number of jobs that paid a family's living wage and offered a decent benefit package. With the exception of a few authors on the left, students of schooling determinedly failed to see this and blamed education for undercutting the gains working people had made since the end of World War II. This misguided human capital theoretic mindset has persisted until today, even espoused by Barack Obama.

Karabel and Halsey's reader remains useful, but it is now badly dated. Halsey et al.'s 1997 reader is so topically diffuse and lacking in theoretical focus that it is not an ideal follow-up, but it's the best one available.
