Essential English is the essential writing tool book for journalists and editors. I was first introduced to this book whilst studying journalism at The University of Sheffield in the UK.

It quickly became one of my favourites. It is a mix of a reference book and textbook. Even if I have written thousands of titles and summaries I still find that I return to this one to fine tune my skills.

This book was first published in 1972 and I found it strange that no one had written a review before me. Just because a book is getting old doesn't mean that it is outdated. This is a must have book for all aspiring journalists and a nice to have for experienced journalists who doesn't know it all already.

Write in it! Play with it! Use it daily!

This jewel caught my eye as I was browsing Barnes & Nobel. I winced at the price ($29.95) but while perusing the book my brain began filling with flashes of inspiration, creative neurons popped like fireworks, and I was hooked. Plus, it would look pretty on my book shelf.

I did well! This tome has all the lists I regularly create (forgetting that I already made - and misplaced - two years ago), all the ones I haven't because I can't, and scores I would have never thought of.

The "Content Words" section is exceptional, covering math, science, social studies, and geography vocabulary. Quiz the kids to see what they remember over summer!

We are having a blast with the "most commonly used words in the English language" section. We do for-fun spelling tests off of the words, in numerical order. My girls were dismayed to find themselves missing words in the first 100 most common words, and quite proud that they were both pulling 100%'ers on words 351-400.

Do you need Greek and Latin roots? Teacher's correction marks? Braille, Morse code, ASL? Prefixes, oxymorons, or sesquipedalian superstars? How about a little onomatopoeia and palindrome word play? As a brain-warmer book - something to start the gears shifting in the morning - it's fun. You can find enough thought-provokers, ego-boosters, and giggle-makers to roust any sluggish student (or teacher).

The Reading Teacher's Book of Lists is a wonderful resource for teachers, especially in helping develop instructional materials and lesson plans for grades K-12 & even for adult literacy. There are lists covering phonics, useful words, vocabulary, subject words, literature, writing, instruction, comprehension & study skills, assessment, spelling, the internet,ESL/language, word play, abbreviations/symbols/signs, and references. This is a highly practical and comprehensive resource for teachers of reading, but is also suitable for parents & students, and anyone interested in the subject matter. I would also recommend Jim Burke's Reading Reminders:Tools, Tips, and Techniques as a companion to this.

Kindle version missing pages

The kindle version looks as if it was just slapped together. The graphics have been scanned terribly. Which seems to speak volumes for the quality of the rest of the content. The charts from the book are too small to read comfortably on the kindle. Those should have been typed and formatted just for the kindle version. The biggest sin is the missing list I found; which happened to be one I truely needed.

The influx of Japanese art and fashion into the American cultural mainstream gets an entertaining treatment from Kelts, an essayist and lecturer at the University of Tokyo, who interviewed many of Japan's leading culture gurus over the past three years. Kelts is clearly most interested in the world of anime and manga (from Pok�mon to Princess Mononoke), as his readers will most likely be. A primary theme is that of the Japanese paradox: how has such a strictly defined and rigid society produced pop art that is, compared to its American counterparts at least, wildly imaginative and boundary bursting? Kelts's belief is that one directly created the other, that anime and manga's wild and kinetic structures, hyperaddictive apocalyptic story lines and surprisingly emotional content (not to mention sex and violence unheard of in American pop culture) could never flourish in an openly permissive and individualistic society that had not experienced nuclear devastation. Although the book grasps too eagerly at its subject's grander implications, it still effectively conveys the cross-Pacific cultural dissonance. Kelts has a sharp grasp of his subject and is on sure ground when discussing the history of the form, especially the impact of Disney on postwar Japanese animators or the reverential awe in which American animators hold such filmmakers as Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away). superb discussion of Japan and the US, beyond anime and manga

As an American who is fascinated with Japan, but frustrated with books about the relationship between the two countries, I found Roland Kelts' "Japanamerica" to be a welcome breath of fresh air. Kelts focuses on the growing popularity of manga and anime among Americans, and the "mobius strip" of give and take between the two cultures, but his focus inevitably widens to address the broader mutual fascination between these two worlds. I love the fact that, as an American with a Japanese mother, Kelts avoids the two hazards of Japanophilia and Japanophobia. There is a refreshingly grounded and sensible middle ground in his analysis, a realism that seems to lighten things up and make it all more accessible and welcoming. Perhaps best of all - and this is a miracle in the world of cultural analysis - Kelts is delightfully unpretentious and his prose is as clear and comprehensible as it is filled with fascinating ideas and observations. Never for a moment do we doubt that Kelts knows what he's talking about it - and he brings it all across with infectious enthusiasm.

Good read, but has problems staying on target

The book is at its best when chronicling the history of the anime industry and the struggle of its major producers to develop a new, internationally-motivated business model without eroding their creative capital. It's worth reading for this reason alone.

It's at its worst when trying to explain the popularity of anime and the cultural confluences that have allowed it to rise into the American public eye, or the factors that might hamper it in the future. Here some of the connections the author attempts to draw fall flat. (Anime is more popular because of 9/11! Um, no.) Matters are not helped by the occasionally jarring non sequiturs he throws in. (For a book which looks down its nose at mindless cultural fetishism, 'Japanamerica' works hard to be one of the cool kids. What do Fox News and the burning of Dixie Chicks CDs have to do with the future of Japanese cultural exports? Realistically, nothing; they're mentioned only so that the author can demonstrate how cool he is by looking down his nose at them. One wonders what kind of America he grew up in such that those elements are representative.)

Overall, this is a worthy snapshot of the state of anime as a cultural phenomenon. I would give it four or even five stars if more of the book were given over to this. As it is, I'd say get the book but skip the preaching about how rape is no problem in Japan and Americans are either Japanophiles or record-burning, Puritan-descended rednecks. Also, take his praise for Bakshi's animated 'Lord of the Rings' with some salt.

gets his analysis spot on...for the most part

Although I nearly busted a gut when the author stated "Japan is one of the most efficient and industrious nations on Earth." Anyone who has worked in any J-company will know that's not true unless you consider a phalanx of people taking days on end to complete simple tasks most Westerners could do in well under a minute. The funny thing is throughout much of the rest of the book he refutes that but showing how Japanese anime makers have the worst business sense outside their own island nation bubble and how inefficient (and inept) their business models are.

The book though is on the whole a fantastically well-researched and his salient points are well taken. Being an editor for J-co's, I appreciated the dig at Japanese unable to grasp the idea that it might be worth their while to spend enough dough to get their Japlish proofread and cleaned up into readable English copy. Thanks for that, Roland.

Although the concentration of this book is on anime, it touches on everything from video games to cos play. Kelts also is able to bridge that gap in understanding that many Westerners who don't "get" J-pop culture on where the weirdness and dicotomy comes from and how it fits right in within J-culture without dire social consequences (i.e., Japan's urban centers are extremely safe yet a lot of manga contain far more graphic sexual and violent images than mainstream American audiences would be able to handle).

This is a pioneering work in a field where no other book is available. It nicely explains the virtualization of wireless networks in every possible way and summarizes the related academical works written so far. If you are interested in the subject there is almost no alternative resource to go to...

The problem with this book is it doesn't flow like a book. It's more like an academical paper written with no concern for readers and printed in the book format: very difficult to follow, very difficult to understand (at least for me)...

I legitimately hated reading it, yet I have to admit that it was helpful for me.

Gripping Account at the Grunt Level

As a Vietnam veteran and 30-year Army officer, I was slightly conflicted while reading “A Rumor of War.” Caputo gives a detailed, grippingly realistic, and honest account of what combat was like at the small platoon level during the Vietnam War in 1965 - 1966. He does not pull any punches in leveling criticism for mistakes in the war. He also does not cover-up his shortcomings as a marine platoon leader as noted when he lost control of his men in a rampage and when he lost control of himself and sent out a patrol with implicit orders to “assassinate” two suspected Viet Cong. He and five of his marines were court-martialed for the second incident but were found not guilty. I was troubled by his conduct in this “murder” and the subsequent investigation.
While I am proud of my Vietnam service, I am not proud of the pressure that senior leaders put on their subordinates to achieve high body counts. Such pressure led to incidents like those depicted by Caputo.
I wish that Caputo had spent just a bit more time on the last month of the Saigon regime while he was a correspondent for the Chicago Tribune.
My only regret in reading this frank account is that I had not read it earlier.

A classic indeed. Very highly recommended

A RUMOR OF WAR, by Philip Caputo.

This is a RE-read for me. I first read Caputo's Vietnam war memoir more than 35 years ago, in a mass market paperback edition, when it was still a pretty new book. Then it was just a very popular and bestselling book. This time I read it in a 1996 Holt Paperback edition, with a front cover caption calling it "The Classic Vietnam Memoir." And it has certainly earned this title, still in print, still much-read. One of the lines I remembered was a comment from a seasoned Korean War veteran, who told the young Lieutenant Caputo - "Before you leave here, sir, you're going to learn that one of the most brutal things in the world is your average nineteen-year-old American boy." And in the madness and heat of combat, young Caputo learned this to be too true. Indeed, he even discovered some of that brutality in himself.

One especially affecting section of the narrative depicts the time that Caputo spent as "Officer in Charge of the Dead," and the fevered, too-real nightmares that went with that job. Another is the unsettling, inebriated feeling he experiences during R&R in Saigon, a feeling that he suddenly realizes is no more than freedom from fear. Similarly, near the end of his tour, he feels it again when he becomes, at least temporarily, indifferent to death.

"It was not a feeling of invincibility; indifference, rather. I had ceased to fear death because I had ceased to care about it. Certainly I had no illusions that my death, if it came, would be a sacrifice. It would merely be a death, and not a good one either ... There were no good deaths in the war."

The real insanity of the war is perhaps best illustrated in Caputo's being brought up on murder charges for a patrol and 'snatch' of suspected VC's he helped to plan. By that time he was not simply indifferent, he was angry, and he could no longer stomach the war.

The flat numbness that was felt by so many veterans of the Vietnam war is well summed up with the final lines of Caputo's story as he takes off on a flight out of Vietnam, bound for home -

"None of us was a hero. We would not return to cheering crowds, parades, and the pealing of great cathedral bells. We had done nothing more than endure. We had survived, and that was our only victory."

Philip Caputo is a fine writer, and yes, this is "The classic Vietnam memoir." Very highly recommended.

RMD - Rumor of War

Every single person in existence should read this book! So much of the Vietnam era is misunderstood. I was discharged from the Army right at the end of Vietnam era ( didn't not go to Vietnam), but,I did protest against the War. And remember, which this generation does understand, the fighting in Vietnam was not considered by the Politicians to be a War!! Why? Why was a conflict as Vietnam was, was not considered a War? Because after President Kennedy was murdered by The Industrialists, (with CIA and NSA help), of this country (USA) a cash cow was created. If Vietnam was concerned to be a War we would have to fight it like a War. Veterans would have to receive the benefits of a War (Medical, and Mental Health, etc) but with a Vietnam Conflict the USA didn't have to do that. Instead all the money could be spent of the War Machine (i.e. Helicopters, Air Planes). This author actually experienced the results of such a political policies.
This book just by his experiences bring out the Truth of the Vietnam War. After you read it have your High Schoolers read it. Don't let History repeat itself.
