Cataclysmic conclusion to an epic tale

"Those Below" is the concluding half of Daniel Polansky's two-part "Empty Throne" saga. The story picks up pretty much where the earlier "Those Above" left off, although a couple of years have gone by between the two, in which things have moved steadily but unspectacularly along the course upon which they were launched in the earlier part. It is clear, however, from the brooding menace of the opening pages (a mood that never lifts throughout the book, by the way) that things will shortly be coming to a head. And in all sorts of unpleasant ways.

As regular readers of his novels will expect, the writing throughout this book is finely honed and polished to perfection, with almost every sentence a delight to read -- even when what is being depicted is of the most gruesome and viscous nature imaginable. (Although one gets the impression that Daniel Polansky can actually imagine far more than we mere mortals who share the planet with him!) Unlike the previous volume which, for me at least, contained the occasional misstep, the author never once loses his footing in this novel, which grinds forward to its fairly inevitable conclusion with the surety and unstoppability of a well-oiled battle engine.

Right from its opening pages, it is clear that this is a book which cannot end well and the only real mystery for the reader will be in gauging just how cataclysmic its ending is going to be -- just how much may be salvageable in the aftermath of the train-crash that we all can see coming. The fact that we care, and indeed continue to care right up the very last page, is testimony indeed to the standard of the story-telling on offer here.

Now that this conclusion to the tale is available, I do hope the publishers will do the decent thing and offer both halves together in one binding.

About the Author
On April 19, 2005, CARDINAL JOSEPH RATZINGER was elected POPE BENEDICT XVI and became the 264th successor to Peter as the "Vicar of Jesus Christ." He may well be the most accomplished theologian to be elected Pope in modern times. Beginning in 1981 he spent over 20 years as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a role often depicted as the "defender of the faith." Cardinal Ratzinger was also President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and of the Preparatory Commission that codified the new "Catechism of the Catholic Church," published in 1994.

Peter Hunermann, Ph.D. did his studies in philosophy and theology in Rome, Munich, and Freiburg, and then was Professor of Dogmatics in Munster and Tobingen. He is the Co-founder and former President of the European Society for Catholic Theology.

Scripture and Tradition Explained

Although this book is only 126 pages, there is quite a bit of information in it. The Pope talks about Sacred Scripture and its relationship with the Church and Sacred Tradtion. For a better understanding of how Scripture and Tradition works whithin the Church, I would recommend this book. Be prepared to take your time and digest each paragraph. These 126 pages offer hours of theological explanation. No fluff here.

Thoughtful, Deep, a bit Cumbersome

An in-depth view of the concepts and reasons of Roman Catholic doctrine. I have read several other books by Pope Benedict that were much easier to read. While well written and thoroughly researched, I found this book most probably aimed at Priests rather than a lay person. As always, you will learn from the author but you may have to keep a good dictionary handy and do some personal research to get to the heart of some issues. I have thoroughly enjoyed each book of his that I have read and this one was no exception. I will warn you that this is not casual reading but a serious look at who Catholics are and why.

Easily Under Estimated But Not Under Done

The one thing wrong with this book is the blurb on the front cover. It should read "Everything You Really Need to Know..." But, the disservice is done to the author--not to readers. It is not possible to tell everything that everyone might need to know in order to do something. What this book does tell is what anyone who is even contemplating restoring a sailboat had better know. It is far more than an overview of the author's own project though, Rather than just hitting the highlites, it covers e-v-e-r-y important point to keep in mind for the project from beginning to end. I have worked with hand tools for more than forty years, and it still gave me some pointers!

There is one thing peculiar about the book. Women, can't seem to keep their hands off it. My wife and her girl friend both liked the book. As if that wasn't strange enough, I took the book with me to my doctors office, and ended up checked into the emergency ward. At one point, I woke up to find my nurse looking through the book. Well, I guess that might be helpful for a guy trying to talk his wife into such a project, but it seemed kind of odd. I asked, and apparently they simply like the way the guy thinks.

Mike Rother is an engineer, a teacher, and a guest researcher at the Technical University Dortmund. Rother’s work has bought him to numerous companies and hundreds of factories around the world, where he collaborates with people to test ideas and shares lessons learned. He splits his time between Ann Arbor, and Cologne, Germany. Rother has been entered into the Association of Manufacturing Excellence's Hall of Fame.

A Facinating Look Behind the Curtain

Tools, rules, techniques are necessary, but not sufficient to move an organization toward a culture of continuous improvement. It is indeed the daily behavior of the people inside the framework of the organization that defines the culture. The Improvement Kata and the Coaching Kata are not new, but they are explained here in a way that makes them an integrated whole and accessible to anyone who will take the time to study this excellent work. I remember back in the 80s when I first read Tom Peter's "In Search of Excellence". He described what is essentially the Improvement Kata and to a lesser degree the Coaching Kata. I remember how shocked I was to read his prescription for revitalizing continuous improvement -- i.e. that organizations must "fail faster". He was of course referring to rapid PDCA cycles where learning rapidly builds upon learning (through failure and success) in a never ending procession toward ever better processes. The Coaching Kata is what ties it all together so that through "respect for people" the Improvement Kata can grow progressively stronger and more pervasive throughout the organization. This is the key to what I've always thought of as "continuously improving the improvement system". Without the Coaching Kata, each improvement effort, regardless of how successful, is robbed of its full potential to create not just process change, but change in the people who created the process change. This evolution of the people, not just the processes, that is the key. Rother explains how this works with clarity and precision. I highly recommend this book.

Sustainable Quality Disciplines

Do you care about Quality? Do you care enough to think about it, study it, practice it, and discipline yourself to achieve it?

If you do, treat yourself to Mike Rother and associates' thoughts on the subject. Read carefully, you will find a perspective, a discipline, and tools that can help you achieve satisfaction from your attention and skillful work.

Placed in the context of the Toyota Production System, Mike Rother offers the benefit of years of observation, study, and practice in the kata of continuous improvement. My personal application is not in a manufacturing context and therefore must be adapted to fit the time constants and activities particular to my institution's work but the principles are clear and implementable.

The down side, at least from a short term "I want results and profits NOW!" perspective, is that it takes time, especially at the institutional level, to achieve noticeable results. So, pick your payoff.

Not really about Kata (and that is a good thing)

The book describes the Toyota logic that underlines the environment where Kata is applied more than Kata itself. And that is a good thing, because Kata is more a consequence of a learning culture than its driver.

Not for beginners; readers need some understanding of organization culture and the need for continuous improvement before embarking in this journey. It is a technical book after all, and not for the casual reader.
