Amazing!

I am currently a student studying ASL/Interpreter Training. I am always looking for ways to suppliment what I learn at college,these books were AMAZING! I honestly think they are better thant he textbooks I used this past semester in a very well respected ITP program.

I would definetly recommend Michelle Jay's books to anyone who wants to learn "real" ASL, not just some watered down version of a mix of ASL and English.

I have purchased all 3 books available by Ms.Jay and can't wait to share them with my fellow students and my ASL professors.

Bonus :) Michelle is a CODA(Child of Deaf Adults), so she really knows her ASL/Deaf Culture!

As a student of American Sign Language (ASL), Michelle Jay's new book; Don't Just "Sign"... Communicate: A Student's Guide to Mastering ASL Grammar has become one of my most referenced books. Previous to my purchasing this book I had searched both the libraries and bookstores to find a book on ASL grammar. The most I ever found was a single chapter here or there out of all the books I researched. I am so delighted to have found, read and studied Jay's book.

The book is laid out in easy to follow chapters (with examples for the student to practice). Some of the chapters include information on: fingerspelling, numbers, types of signs, the five sign parameters, which is fundamental if you are studying to become an interpreter, syntax and many other vital elements of ASL grammar. I must admit that I was surprised to realize that ASL grammar is NOT the same as that of English. I continually refer back to this book.
Jay's book can be purchased singly or as part of her three book series which is wonderful for the serious ASL student. Her website also offers free or paid ASL lessons. I highly recommend the entire series of three books which also include; Don't Just "Sign"... Communicate: A Student's Guide to ASL and the Deaf Community and Don't Just "Sign"... Communicate: A Student's Pocket Guide to Deaf Community Terminology.

Well Worth It!!!

I am future student of ASL/Interpreter Training. While looking for material that would probably aid me prior to walking to a class with no knowledge at all, since I believe that Sign Language is definitely a whole language of its own, by chance landed me on a website directed my Michelle Jay and the material found plus her three text books I am most definitely no longer concerned nor intimidated.

I recommend this edition, this translation because:

I am one of those people who, out of pride perhaps, force themselves to read classic old stuff even when it gives me headaches. I was braced for such an experience when I began to read Beowulf. I remembered being completely disinterested when I had to read an excerpt of it in high school.
But I was pleasantly surprised. In the first place, Beowulf is short; I was able to read it in an afternoon.
Secondly, the translation is very readable and entertaining. A few times I had to read a sentence twice to understand it, but that happens. The translator was definitely a craftsman of the English language.
Third, the story is entertaining. It's fun to read. This might not be true of all classic literature! It's an adventure story, and a pleasing one. One reason it was fun to read is that you can feel the pleasures of the heroic values that the poet and his audience shared; in this respect it's similar to what you might experience in "Lord of the Rings." In fact, the story often reminded me of Tolkien--I confidently guaratee that Tolkien fans will enjoy it. (Tolkien also wrote one of the essays included in this edition.)
Fourth, it is interesting to read the oldest "English" story (of course our language has evolved so much that we now need a translator). The historical interest is much aided by the essays in the Norton Critical edition, including very helpful maps of England and ancient Scandinavia. One interesting aspect of Beowulf is the tension between pre-Christian values and Christian ones within the story as we know it. Again, the essays were interesting and enlightening about this as well.
All in all, this is classic literature at its best: readable, highly entertaining, and educational (and short). The essays and maps really were helpful; you won't need to buy the Cliffs Notes to understand or appreciate the text. If you want to read classic literature, I strongly recommend Beowulf; if you want to read Beowulf, I strongly recommend this edition.

Much more useful than Heaney's version

I am a dissenter from the hype surrounding Seamus Heaney's new translation. I prefer Donaldson for two important reasons: the transparency of the translation and the translator's humble willingness to let stand archaic implications that may seem absurb or offensive to most people today.
On a technical level, Donaldson--much more consistently than Heaney--reproduces Old English compounded words and phrases with Modern equivalents. He does this with accuracy and freshness--if not with seamless grace as some readers would prefer. The great advantage of Donaldson's approach is that the reader who does not read OE can at least imagine that she can second-guess the translator, and can feel the raw, rugged texture of the original. Even my 12th grade (inner city high school) students who have bought Heaney's version have become irate at a number of crucial points where the complexity preserved by Donaldson has been eliminated by Heaney.
A second point--or a second way of looking at the same point--concerns interpretation. With all due respect to Heaney, he has an agenda related to the future of the European Union, and I suspect that this motivated or influenced his approach to the translation of Beowulf. Heaney is presenting, via the seminal text of Beowulf, a vision of the origins of European politcs that he believes will ultimately lay a foundation for its future viability and humanity.
Heaney's version is this a much more creative endeavor than was Donaldson's. Where Donaldson allows seeming incoherencies to emerge for the modern reader, Heaney makes things make sense. The main difference here lies in the treatment of the hero. For Heaney, Beowulf is an unambiguous ideal figure. Donaldson, on the other hand, preserves the original ambiguity of a hero who is physically similar to the monsters he fights in his superiority to ordinary men.
Yes, Jacques, there's no translation without interpretation, but there's also a question of degree of control to consider. Heaney's translation falls in line with the unfortunate tradition of Raffel, whose Procrustean approach privileged modern sensibility above everything else. Heaney is much better than Raffel, but Donaldson is one of those rare translations that has and will continue to stand the test of time becaus he didn't try too hard to be a person of his time.

Well, perhaps reading a poem as a poem would be better.

After reading this version of Beowulf, I think it is a worthy translation, so I am not really criticizing the translation. I'm sure Donaldson's work is top notch. However, I did not enjoy the way the story read.

Some opinions about work done on Beowulf that I've read by Beowulf experts is that if you translate it in a prose form, so as to give a more exact meaning to the original, you really are defaulting to a sort of cop-out. It makes it appear that you really do not want to put the hard work in to make a great poetic translation. I'm not sure I agree with that assessment necessarily, but I understand the point.

Having read lines of Beowulf from Heaney's translation, and comparing it to Donaldson's translation, I can say that Heaney's (and probably other translators) brings so much more feeling to the poem. This may not mean much, but after only reading the opening lines about Shield Sheafson (spelled differently from Donaldson's), up to the point where it says "that was one good king," Heaney's version brings tears to my eyes, it is so moving.

There was not a single point in Donaldson's translation where I felt that moved. That may not mean anything for most, because reading is a very subjective experience, but for me, I will not likely read Donaldson's translation again for enjoyment, but will keep it around as a reference for comparison.

EDIT (12/23/09): After reading Beowulf: A New Verse Translation (Bilingual Edition) (yes, finally got around to it), I must say my initial impressions are borne out. Heaney's translation is so much more enjoyable and is a fulfilling read as a work of art on its own, so one can imagine the wonder when it is a translation of an epic poem such as Beowulf.

The author's conclusions run directly against the current developments in privacy law coming out of the EU, and are supportive of what one would call a pro-corporate view. As a CIPP certified attorney working in information governance, I do have an opinion on the matter, and think that American law needs to adjust and start looking at privacy as a right to control personal information AND have that access restricted. Had I bought this book when it came out, perhaps I would have given it 4 stars for the scholarship, but if you read it carefully the ideas attack the concept of "individual privacy" with respect to data in almost any way they can. It is troubling that this is the type of thinking currently adopted at the FTC as "newer." I took a course on data privacy law while at University of Miami School of Law in the early 2000's and have major problems with the authors core thesis. Even as a libertarian in some regards, I feel that data privacy should be afforded rights protection and regulated in some fashion as a human right - not through a hodgepodge of separate agencies and laws as it currently is with the FTC and others. To say that the current system is the right way - I'm not convinced by the artful legal writing. This book provides an example of what its like to take a law class with a professor who has an ideological bent: regulatory vs anti, and so forth. Annoyed that I bought this based on the already outdated thinking reflected in its contents, which ideologically opines that things are fine the way they are in a sense AND that we should put the topic of online data privacy rights and so forth to rest. Its propaganda in its own way.

Philosophy and Privacy Meet Technology

We have a right to privacy, but it is neither a right to control nor a right to access our own personal information. Instead, it is a right to an "appropriate flow of personal information." Opposite most defenses of privacy in the modern world, Nissenbaum dismisses any conversation about the hazards of private information in the public sphere. In fact, in her book, "Privacy in Context: Technology, Policy, and the Integrity of Social Life", Helen Nissenbaum tries to abolish the public/private dichotomy, instead stressing the importance of social norms in dictating how information is shared.
Nissenbaum studied philosophy from bachelors to doctoral, ending up a professor at New York University where she specializes in the philosophy and politics at technology. She laid the foundation for contextual privacy that the Federal Trade Comission has now begun to champion (http://www.ftc.gov/reports/preliminary-ftc-staff-report-protecting-consumer-privacy-era-rapid-change-proposed-framework). She continues to influence governmental and scientific bodies alike, lecturing on her contextual approach to privacy monthly.
But on to the book itself. Nissenbaum does not write to the casual reader—she takes an idea, dissects it, analyzes from several angles (usually citing other philosophers), slowly recreates the original intent in a new light, then masterfully summarizes it in her own way. The book is split into three parts—the first, which I found to be the most engaging section, was a keen description on how information technology has changed the way privacy can be violated. The second remains purely theoretical, describing alternate approaches to privacy and beginning Nissenbaum’s attack on the public/private dichotomy. The third and final part presents in voluminous form her own approach to how violations to privacy should be evaluated.
Though the author’s idea of contextual integrity has in some ways revolutionized the modern consideration of privacy, I struggle to agree with one of the book’s core beliefs: that privacy’s defense lies in social norms and expectations. Society’s expectations for informational flows change rapidly and unpredictably, and I doubt any philosophical theory that settles on popular opinion rather than logic or principles to defend its findings.
In sum, the book has a great discussion on privacy and the ways it can be approached in modern society, however, the read is not for the faint of heart. The Best Book I have Read on Privacy

This is the best book I have read on the subject of privacy. It includes an examination of the philosophical, political, moral and technical aspects in a comprehensive yet not overwhelming way. There is little biases or editorializing. The book presents the facts with substance and depth that is refreshing and helpful in deciding what approach to privacy you may decide to adopt.
The book builds on fundamental concepts of privacy, provides examples and builds on legal and philosophical points of view. I am using this book to develop approaches to data privacy for a number of organizations.

If you work in the arena of data privacy or work with data you must read this book. If you are concerned or curious about the issues of data privacy you should read this book.

Modern Apostle's explanation of the need for a Restoration

Jesus Christ came to earth. Died and was resurrected. That's basic Christian theology.

He established a Church before He died and during His post resurrection ministry. This is where some Christians start disagreeing.

The Church He founded changed. A fact. But there is wide disagreement on whether this is a good thing. Thus we have the Protestant Reformation and various versions of Christianity today.

The Church changed so much that reform was not enough. It was necessary to start again and re-establish the Church with Apostles and authority as had the Ancient Church. That's where this book begins.

An Apostle of the restored Church of Jesus Christ explains how that all happened. The Great Apostasy takes its name from the process of falling away from the Ancient Church of Jesus Christ. It also explains about the restoration of His Church.

This is not written as a history, but as an apostolic treatise. It uses history and scripture to enlighten.

The writing style is somewhat dated. Reads like many tomes written during the first half of the 20th century. Very good for understanding the theological underpinnings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Dr.Hancock did a scholarly,thorough work in compiling the information that he presented in this book.I have always been very impressed with Dr.Hancock's abilitity to provide understandable perspectives about a complex,extraordinary people.he was a Linguistics Professor of mine at UT in the 1970's & is quite remarkable himself.

This book is a very good overview of the Romani culture for people living with Romani neighbors and working with Romani people. We are helping sponsor a Romani refugee family from Kosova and found this book invaluable in helping us help them feel more comfortable in the U.S. It is written with a focus on helping teachers, social workers and others working with Romani people understand the culture. We learned a lot by reading it. It helps Americans understand the extent and roots of anti-Gypsy bias in Europe, and how many of those negative stereotypes crossed the oceans with the ancestors of European Americans!

A must-have

This is a must-read book for anyone who is interested in not only the Romani people but also in the roles they have played in history. So much of their story is not known or not understood and this book deals with it in such an honest and straight forward way. It discusses and tackles the issues faced by the Romani people but does it in a way that doesn't point fingers or make excuses. Of the few books that actually deal with this topic, most of them are slanted to one side or the other. Hancock's book gives out the informattion for anyone who wants to read it. His personal insight is so helpful, as most of the other authors writing on this topic are non-Romani. This is such an important book, especially for someone interested in specific genres of history like the Holocaust or Middle Ages that it should definitely be on recommended reading lists. Of course you don't need to be a historian just to find this book insightful and interesting. I think everyone should read this book.

Realism's Others examines the various strategies by which realist narratives create the idea of difference, whether that difference is registered in terms of class, ethnicity, epistemology, nationality, or gender. The authors in this collection examine in detail not just the fact of otherness in some canonical realist and canonical magical-realist and postmodern novels, but the actual means by which that otherness is established by the text. These essays suggest that neither realist narrative nor narratives positioned as anti-realist take otherness for granted; rather, the texts discussed here actively create difference, and this creation of difference often occasions severe difficulties for the novels' representational schema. How does one represent different types of knowledge, other aesthetic modes or other spaces, for example, in texts whose epistemology has long been seen as secular and empirical, whose aesthetic mode has always been approached as pure descriptive mimesis, and whose settings are largely domestic? These essays all begin with a certain collision-of nationalities, of classes, of representational matrices, of religions-and go on to chart the challenges that this collision presents to our ideas or stereotypes of realism, or to the possibilities of writing against and beyond realism. This question motivates examination of key realist or social-realist texts, in some of these essays, by Honor� de Balzac, George Eliot, Franz Grillparzer, Theodor Storm, Gottfried Keller, Theodor Fontane, Wilhelm Raabe, Mar�a Amparo Ruiz de Burton, Henry James, William Dean Howells, Charles Chesnutt, Theodore Dreiser, H. T. Tsiang, Alan Sillitoe, and Richard Yates. However, it is no less central a question in certain non-realist texts which engage realist aims to a surprising degree, often to debate them openly; some of these essays discuss, in this light, fantastic, magical realist, and postmodern works by Abram Tertz, Paul Auster, Alejo Carpentier, Toni Morrison, Gabriel Garc�a M�rquez, Salman Rushdie, and A. S. Byatt. Realism becomes more than an aesthetic aim or narrative mode. It becomes, rather, a value evoked and discussed by all of the works analyzed here, in order to reveal its impact on fiction's treatment of ethnicity, nationality, ideology, space, gender, and social class.

Eva Aldea is a tutor at Goldsmiths College, University of London and Westminster University. She is the author of Magical Realism and Deleuze: The Indiscernibility of Difference (Continuum, 2010).
