Handy, a British specialist in organizational management, predicts that the 21st century will be the Age of Unreason. In an era when changes in business and society will be "discontinuous" or patternless, he suggests that our thinking must become discontinuous or "unreasonable" in order to use such changes to our advantage. While his thesis is generally in line with strategists like Tom Peters ( In Search of Excellence, LJ 2/15/83), Handy focuses more on the philosophy, rather than the mechanics, of adaptive change in society. His examples from the business world are interestingly extended to social institutions like marriage and family. Nicely written, this should be popular with open-minded management types. A good addition to management collections.

Progress Depends on the Unreasonable Man!

As best described by the author: "The purpose of this book is to promote a better understanding of the changes which are already about us, in order that we may, as individuals or as a society, suffer less and profit more.Changes, after all, is only another word for growth, another synonym for learning. We can all do it, and enjoy it, if we want to. The story or argument of this book rests on three assumptions:

1) That the changes are different this time: they are discontinuous and not part of a pattern; such discontinuity happens from time to time in history, although it is confusing and disturbing, particularly to those in power.

2) that is is the little changes which can in fact make the biggest differences to our lives, even if these go unnoticed at the time, and that is is the changes in the way our work is organized which will make the biggest differences to the way we all will live; and

3) that discontinuous change requires discontinuous upside-down thinking to deal with it, even if both thinkers and thoughts appear absurd at first sight."

The book covers the various aspects that these changes affect including professional (organizations where we work), personal, and government. The author's main objective is: "If people start to think unreasonably and try to shape their world the way they think it ought to be, then I shall be content."

A very deep and insightful analysis of the world we are living in, and the necessary shift in the way we think and act within it. The breadth of areas covered in this book and its completeness are to be commended.

1- "It is best, I realized, to think of learning as a wheel divided into four parts: questions, theories, testing, and reflections. I describe it as a wheel to emphasize that it is meant to go round and round. One set of questions, duly answered and tested and reflected upon, leads on to another."

2- "Learning is not just knowing the answers...It does not help you to change, or to grow, it does not move the wheel...Learning is not the same as study, nor the same as training...It is a cast of mind, a habit of life, a way of thinking about things, a way of growing...Learning is not automatic, it requires energy, thought, courage and support...Learning is not for the intellectuals, who often shine at the theorizing stage, but are incurious and unadventurous and therefore add little to their experience as they go through life. Learning is not finding out what other people already know, but is solving our own problems for our own purposes, by questioning, thinking and testing until the solution is part of our lives."

3- "I am suggesting, on the basis of good evidence, that those who learn best and most, and change most comfortably, are those who a) take responsibility for themselves and for their future; b) have a clear view of what they want that future to be; c) want to make sure they get it; and d) believe they can."

4- "...the organization of today is made up of three very different expectations, managed differently, paid differently, organized differently...The first leaf of the shamrock represents the core workers...these are the people who are essential to the organization. These are the people who are essential to the organization. Between them they own the organizational knowledge which distinguishes that organization from its counterparts...If the core is smaller, who then does the work? Increasingly, it is contracted out to organizations I call the second leaf of the shamrock...The third leaf of the shamrock is the flexible labor force, all those part-time workers and temporary workers who are the fastest growing part of the employment scene."

5- "Alongside the emerging shamrock organization we can discern the gradual development of the federal organization...Federalism seeks to make it big by keeping it small, or at least independent, combining autonomy with cooperation. It is the method which businesses are slowly, and painfully, evolving for getting the best of both worlds - the size which gives them clout in the marketplace and in the financial centers, as well as some economies of scale, and the small unti size which gives them the flexibility which they need, as well as the sense of community for which individuals increasingly hanker."

6- "The Japanese have a nice way of developing their high-potential young people. They actually have a fast-track route for them, but instead of it being a vertical fast-track up though the organization, it is a horizontal fast-track, a succession of different jobs, real jobs with tough standards to be met, but all at the same level. The advantages are that not only does the yound person get a wider view of the organization, he or she gets a chance to test our their talents and skills in a wide variety of roles."

7- "The new formula for success, and for effectiveness is I3=AV, where I stands for Intelligence, Information, and Ideas, and AV means added value in cash or in kind."

8- "The research made it clear that there is no optimal pattern for a marriage. All patterns are possible. It seems essential to have a joint understanding of what the pattern is, how and when it might change, what the consequences are for living in a certain patterns and what are the costs and benefits. People clearly can change their pattern and what are the costs and benefits. People clearly can change their pattern if both parties want to. Separation and divorce often seem to occur because one partner wants to change the pattern and the other does not."

9- "The upside-down school would make study more like work, based on real problems to be solved or real tasks to be done, in groups of mixed ages and different types of ability, all of them useful."

10- "Inevitably, now, government will have increasingly to deal direct with individuals rather than with organizations, will have to rethink the categories it puts people into, and find some new ways to organize the collection and distribution of wealth if the organization cannot do it for them."

Like all of Charles Handy's work, it's far ahead of its time. The Age of Unreason is no exception. A worthwhile read for those trying to understand how the way we work is organized, as well as how globalization continues to change the world for better and for worse.

Don't take it *too* literally.

I had to both laugh at and give a helpful vote to the review below which accused the author of citing half-baked fragments of myths and anecdotes as evidence. To a certain degree, it's a fair cop, particularly if you're looking for a book which is going to really stunningly predict the future.

_The Age of Unreason_ isn't about predicting the future, it's about training yourself to look at the future in ways that you might otherwise not have done. As such, I found it a valuable and interesting book which is clearly based in a lot of meditation on learning and learning theories.

Some of the things Handy mentioned turned out to have become true since the book was written. Other things didn't-- but it doesn't matter ultimately. What the book asks is this: Can you recognize the real causes for pain that you identify? Can you think differently to force discontinuous change? Is your vision of the future based on an accurate perception of the past, or are you looking past major factors because you don't recognize the role of gradual change?

People who like this book may like some of the books on developing strategies using scenario exercises. This book also contains a decent (if dated) bibliography.

I hope this is a Joke

Disgusting.
This guy wrote a book about how MTV perceives people. The writing is foolish and bland. Couldn't even make it through the whole book.
24yr old kids with wealthy families, who's parents buy them BMWs and allow them to throw money away on "poppin bottles" for women in night clubs should NOT write self help books.
Save your money, because this author knows nothing of what he preaches. Clearly he is writing how media looks at life's issues and not through his own views, yet he displays them as his own personal experience.

"This book is a first-hand account from someone who went through the first 18 years of their life unpopular, bullied, rejected, and ridiculed". I was friends with James from the time he was 16 till about 20ish and this statement is not so true from what I observed. I have not had a chance to read the book yet but just from that statement I don't think I will. I believe if you are going to write a story about yourself then make sure its completely true and not something to try to make yourself look worse than it was. He grew up a rich kid in Arlington MA, with everything he wanted all the way down to his cars.

Stories embellished, couldn't finish

The story line starts as a kid who is bullied then rises from the ashes to be a successful adult. I could not come to finish the book because it soon turned into a rambling of "look what I did and how great I am" hardly an inspirational book. I did some research and found he happens to be from a quite wealthy family in which he often uses his parents success as his success I.e. lives with and is funded by his parents. I lost all respect for his 'Rough upbringing' after learning more about him. But none the less if you like a nice fiction story of the gregarious sort, it could be worth the .99 for kindle.

Somit bedarf die erfolgreiche Gestaltung und Einf�hrung innovativer Produkte am Markt eines Planungskonzeptes, das beide erfolgorientierten Strategierichtungen umfasst und ber�cksichtigt, zum einen die Einbeziehung des Kunden in die Produktentwicklung (Kundenorientierung) und zum anderen die vollst�ndige Produktionsausrichtung am Kunden gew�hrleistet. Als ein solches Planungseinsatzinstrument der kundenorientierten Qualit�t hat sich die Methode des Quality Function Deployment erwiesen, wobei die Qualit�t als Eignung zur Befriedigung der existierenden Bed�rfnisse (gegebenenfalls auch der nicht-existierenden) von Konsumenten subjektiv verstanden wird. Die Methode des Quality Function Deployment tr�gt dem Philosophiegedanken des Total Quality Managements Rechnung und nimmt als eines der effektivsten Instrumente zur Transformation der Kundenw�nsche in qualit�tsdeterminierende Produktmerkmale innerhalb der Planung und Steuerung von Innovationsprozessen eine zentrale Rolle ein. very fine matter

This book is unique among the primary "Gurdjieff texts". Unlike Fragments, G is unmediated by Ouspensky, and unlike Herald and All & Everything, the collected texts in this book (aside from the opening story Glimpses) are transcribed from oral talks given by G to his pupils, not volumes prepared for publication. So the 'voice' here is very direct, authentic according to the oral tradition.

Due to the nature of this collection, the matter is pretty eclectic, not tied down to just one particular time or place where Gurdjieff gave his ideas. It thus gives a great deal of amazing material on just about every aspect of 'the fourth way' that you could imagine. (This is why Fragments, great though it is, is a bit 'narrow' in the sense that it is all based on one specific period (fairly short) of G's work.) Also interesting is that between each section of the book, little 'aphorism'-type snippets are included from here and there, things G has said, presumably, which someone has jotted down...

All in all, although perhaps a certain amount of 'preparatory study' is advisable through Fragments and Beelzebub, this is essential food for someone serious about the work.

Incidentally, this hardback first edition of the book contained one talk (very interesting) which was withdrawn from all subsequent editions, called ""Answer to a question about the difference between animate and inanimate". I don't know why it is no longer included in the book, but in any case permission has been obtained and the talk is now available on the 'holy planet Purgatory' website.

While it may have once been true that the French have no weight problems, that's no longer the case: at the current rate, the French could be as fat as Americans by 2020. Neurophysiologist Clower (The Fat Fallacy) acknowledges only research supporting his premise, however, in this more pragmatic version of the bestselling French Women Don't Get Fat. Clower picks apart our bad habits and replaces them with healthier (and, incidentally, "French" ones), pushing, for instance, the French habit of obtaining calcium from food rather than supplements, quoting data indicating supplements are linked to kidney stones. In another example, he pits the French practice of eating butter against the American penchant toward margarine, citing butter as healthier. He later admits this is only true if you eat a little butter (eat a little margarine and the results will be similar). And so it goes throughout this sentimental homage to the French. The advice is, at heart, sound: eat fresh foods and smaller portions, and exercise more. Readers who would like to accomplish this nibbling Camembert while walking along the Seine will be pleased, although a stroll through the American food pyramid will net similar, though admittedly less romantic, results. Delicious!

I've read The Fat Fallacy, taken Dr. Clowers' PATH training, and met the man in person. This book is like sitting down and having a conversation with him. It's clarity, it's promise, it's decadence in moderation.

I owe my life to Dr. Clower. In 2004 I had hit my highest weight ever, been diagnosed with chronic hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, and I could barely move or walk without pain and being out of breath. I was on the verge of submitting to weight loss surgery! I wholeheartedly adopted the principles in the book "The Fat Fallacy" and I've dropped nearly 70 pounds, reduced my hypertension, nearly reversed my diabetes AND had a happy, healthy bouncing baby boy! And, no weight loss surgery, either.

And this was accomplished even without all the wonderful information I've learned in the last couple of months with the PATH training and what is in "The French Don't Diet". I realize now that I have more room for improvement and I'm eager for the changes and continued good health and weight loss. Never has eating and being active been so fun and delicious.

I've never lived a 'low-fat' life, but I did overeat for decades and I ate many bad-for-me foods. Now, I don't eat it if I don't know what's in it, I don't buy it without looking at the ingredients, and I've begun to step out of my comfort zone and actually prepared foods for myself like bread, gravies, salad dressings. Things I felt inept at creating, so I bought pre-packaged and pre-prepared versions chock full of chemicals and faux foods and health-sapping components. I've tried several recipes in Dr. Clower's books and they are amazing! And easy! So easy it's crazy. I spent years avoiding creating in the kitchen out of fear. Fear and laziness. Something the food industry capitalizes on. But, not anymore!

I appreciate the knowledge Dr. Clower and his books have imparted to me and my family and friends. We now know what's healthy and what's not. We enjoy our food and our lives so much more now, and we're losing weight and getting healthy in the process!

The best thing you can do for your self and your family is read this book and adopt the principles contained within. This isn't a 'diet' it's a lifestyle. A French lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle. Mind, body, spirit.

Once you do this there is no going back to the Standard American Diet. The SAD will kill you.

love your food, and say goodbye to dieting

A couple of years ago I swore off diets forever, and I still think it's one of the best moves I've ever made. So why did I pick up this book? I wasn't enjoying my meals like I thought I should, and enough of an obsession with food remained in my psyche to spoil my peace of mind. Past experiences with the European approach to eating had been wonderful, so I was curious to see what Dr. Clower would say. I read the book as a "how to eat well and love it" manual rather than a "lose weight" guide, avoiding parts of the book that even hinted at calorie or portion recommendations. The results have been great. For the past six weeks, by eating higher-quality and tastier food, slowing down and really relishing my food, making mealtimes a relaxing break in the day, etc. I've been enjoying my food more than I have in years. Rarely do I feel any anxiety about food and mealtimes now. Also, I've been fascinated at how this approach really makes me satisfied with less. I always thought eating less would mean less to enjoy, but this hasn't been the case. When I'm satisfied after a few bites, I just look forward to the next meal. Enjoying my meals and rarely having that too-stuffed feeling is a wonderful change. Eating less has also balanced out the expense of switching to better food. I've lost some weight, all while drinking whole milk, eating 2 or 3 leisurely meals rather than the diet-gurus' recommended but unmanageable 5 to 6 meals a day, not obsessing over carbs, etc--in other words, while breaking all kinds of diet rules. What beautiful irony! But the best thing about this approach is the sense of well-being and peace it promotes. Read selectively, this book helped me step farther away from the artificial, diet-obsessed insanity that's out there. My reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that this book still promotes itself with one foot in the "diet" camp. But all in all, it's an inspiring, useful, and almost therapeutic book. I'd even say life-changing, except that it's been just six weeks, and only time will tell how well these changes settle into my life over the long run. Great recipies too, by the way.

Common Sense Approach to Weight Loss and Good Health

Wouldn't you stick with a program that encourages you to enjoy moderate amounts of artisan bread, butter, cheese, wine, and chocolate? There are so many contradictory messages today about what we should or shouldn't be eating - it is a relief to find someone promoting moderation and common sense. This book builds on the principles of Dr. Clower's first book The Fat Fallacy and provides real-life techniques to help you enjoy real food, manage stress and improve your health. Too often, North Americans are "penny wise and dollar foolish" about their eating habits; focusing on micromanaging every nutrient instead of changing the lifestyle habits that contribute to bad health and excess weight.

I've been following Dr. Clower's advice for over two years and it has greatly improved my health. I've lost those last few pounds, my gastro problems are gone, my skin tone has improved and my cholesterol levels are great all from eating real food in moderate amounts. Since I've been cooking with a moderate amount of real fat (butter, olive and nut oils), my family and I have been eating more vegetables - they just taste better. I shop for ingredients not products. Yes we eat white bread, but it's wonderful chewy artisan bread that tastes great so one or two small slices is all you need to feel satisfied. I rarely eat fast food, junk food or candy now; not because I don't think I should, but because I've lost my taste for it. So if you want to relax, enjoy your food, lose weight and improve your health, I recommend that you buy this book.

If you're interest in concert hall acoustics, this is the book for you

This is a fascinating book, with technical details on a hundred concert halls throughout the world--dimensions, seating charts, reverb time, construction materials, and ratings according to expert opinion.

Beranek is still alive (he was born in September 1914, so he's 99 years old), and is an expert in concert hall acoustics. His one notable failure was the design of Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall (now Avery Fisher Hall), so this concert hall is not among those featured in this book.
