A required reading I actually loved

This book was a required text for a media studies class I took as part of my major, but I honestly really liked the book and was happy to read it. Miller explains things very clearly in my opinion, and gives good examples to demonstrate his points or arguments. If you're interested in how culture has changed in the digital age, both economically and socially, this is an interesting read.

How the internet and society are changing each other

If you are looking for a scholarly book about how people have been using the internet and social networking sites over the past 20 years, this book is ideal. Vincent Miller seems very well grounded in whatever social sciences happened before the internet and postmodernism. He reviews things like New Social Movements through the lens of the transition in Western Advance Capitalist Democracies from class based politics to identity politics. He correctly notes that the web hasn't so much radically transformed society, just made it much easier for people to explore, investigate and share their interests more than the 'net being a tool for complete social transformation. So Miller not only accurately describes the world of broad internet access but asks important questions about how it is shaping up, how politics are affected and how our society and how real life social relations are changing and being changed by internet communication technology. A most enlightening book.

Mark A. Gluck is a Professor of Neuroscience at Rutgers University–Newark, co-director of the Memory Disorders Project at Rutgers–Newark, and publisher of the project’s public health newsletter, Memory Loss and the Brain.� His research focuses on the neural bases of learning and memory, and the consequences of memory loss due to aging, trauma, and disease.� He is co-author of Gateway to Memory: An Introduction to Neural Network Modeling of the Hippocampus and Learning (MIT Press, 2001).� In 1996, he was awarded an NSF Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers by President Bill Clinton. That same year, he received the American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguish Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology.�Eduardo Mercado is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York.� His research focuses on how different brain systems interact to develop representations of experienced events, and how these representations change over time.� Dr. Mercado currently uses techniques from experimental psychology, computational neuroscience, electrical engineering, and behavioral neuroscience to explore questions about auditory learning and memory in rodents, cetaceans, and humans.Catherine E. My Name is Brett was such a touching, and accessible memoir. As I reader I felt as if I was going through all of his trials and triumphs with him. Touching on faith, and finding a place in the world for himself, as himself. I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with finding self love, Brett Ray, shows in this lovely memoir that to fall in love with yourself is the greatest kind of love story.

I actually received this book from a friend who interviewed Brett and he signed it for me. Brett is an incredibly humble man; I was a little afraid of reading this book as I am not a Christian, however this book was about a man of humble beginnings. This is the story of not only Brett, but also his family and how they handled his transition. Truly inspirational. I finished this book in two hours and immediately ordered and shipped this to a close friend after deciding I wanted to keep my copy.

It's just a poorly-written term paper

This book is easy to read, I'll give it that. But it is very poorly organized. It's like someone just sat down and started rambling about ERP without really outlining the book. Sections are repeated throughout the book. Major point are difficult to extract. If I had written this, I'm sure I would have gotten a C. At least that's what I'd give it. It just needs to be re-organized.

Very comprehensive and great for students/graduates

This book is perfect for those who are interested in getting a career in digital media / interactivity / web design or app making.

Not only does it show you lots of great examples, but my favourite part is that it gives a "behind the scenes" look at how different projects are put together and managed.

If you are a digital media student you will love this, because it shows you how the theory you learn in the classroom can apply to your projects on the job.

It is also great at explaining many of the different roles that you can work in, and it gives you a sense of just how broad the field of digital media has become.

I also wanted to highlight the fact that the book itself is well designed. Not only in terms of flow, but in layout and typography. Unfortunately, many similar texts that talk about new media and or interactivity are unattractive to look at - not so this gem. There is something of a temporal nature to interactive texts, but the way this book underscores process makes it very relevant now.

Is this an Addams Family for the new millennium?

The October Faction is a graphic novel about Frederick Allan, a monster hunter who is now retired. His children want to follow in his footsteps ... an idea that Frederick doesn't care for. The daughter, Vivian, proves herself more than capable, though I'm still sure why the son/brother has any interest in hunting monsters.

In a story that centers around a family of monster hunters, it's certainly no surprise that there are some evil characters around but there is nothing outrageously monstrous (for a horror story), though 'Dante' makes for an interesting and intriguing semi-villain.

I'd initially thought that this book was going to be about the children, beginning to take over the business from their father, but it segued to the father not quite giving it up, then to the a man who is shot by Frederick in the parlor, buried, and rises again in the presence of his sister.

I couldn't quite get a handle on the story, but I think that's because there isn't one yet. We're still in the phase of discovering who the characters are. This might be fine in some cases, particularly in a comic book series that will be ongoing, but without at least a hint of where these characters are headed, it just rambles.

The artwork is quite unique. It is sharp, angular, and just enough off-kilter as to suggest a world that is also off-kilter. The coloring is beautiful. It is dark and rich with patterns. For me, this art was the saving grace of a book that meandered around a story. However, even with the art, there were strange issues. For some odd reason, an occasional panel would be blurry. It was too often to be anything other than planned, but because the art is unique enough (and beautiful) as it is, we really didn't need this distraction just to have the art make a statement.

This is an odd book, in so many ways. I liked the art and thought that the characters showed some promise, but the story rambled so much that there was nothing to sink my teeth in to. This is one of those books that if I should see the next volume, I may pick it up, I may not, but if I don't read the next volume, I don't think I'll be missing anything.

Looking for a good book? The October Faction is a dark graphic novel about a family of monster hunters, but nothing much happens in this volume.

Not Enough Meat In This First Volume

October Faction Volume 1 was a study of contrasts for me. I both liked and didn't like it; weirdly enough, it wasn't that part was good and part was bad. Rather, that I liked and disliked the same exact thing at the same time. The art was interesting but I didn't love it; the story never had an arc and meandered everywhere but I didn't get annoyed; the characters seemed really distinct and yet they weren't; the monsters felt fresh but none were. I'm not sure how to make sense of it other than to say that by the end, it just didn't pull me in - the promise of the first few pages never materialized for me by the end.

Story: Frederick Allan is a former monster hunter, now retired and lecturing at the local university. His kids have grown up and want to follow in their father's footsteps - but he's not quite sure he likes that idea. Compounding things, his former partner contracted werewolf disease and fights it every day. When his wife seeks to get his attention and lets loose an old enemy, things get fairly crazy for the everyone.

I wish the story had focused on one member of the family. We're given small bits of each - the son and the ghosts he sees on a schoolmate, the daughter wanting more excitement, the wife feeling neglected by her once exciting husband, and the put-upon professor. We get little glimpses but never anything more from the characters. I kept expecting to see a poignant moment but it all seemed to be vignettes that never really fleshed anyone out.

I enjoyed the art - it was suitably creepy with a monochromatic tonality and rough, unfinished quality. The watercolor-like style has a dreamy, painterly feel that suits the story perfectly. Oddly enough, like the story, the art never defines the characters and so they look as sketchy as they are written. Perhaps another reason I never really felt I 'knew' any of the characters.

There's not really a story arc here and some events intertwine but it felt fairly random. Perhaps things will coalesce more in future issues. But for me, I really wanted something more than we see in this first volume. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided buy the publisher.

MORE NILES IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING

Steve Niles has an active imagination, you have to give him that. The man who brought us vampires in Alaska where they had 30 days of night to feast brings a new book to fans of horror comics. It’s a lot of fun filled with a horror element that isn’t what you normally find in comics like these. Well, that is unless they’re written by Steve Niles.

The book focuses on Frederick Allan, a professor teaching a college course on monsters and mythology. In reality Frederick is an ex-monster hunter who has taken to hiding for the past 30 years to protect his family. Included in that group are his wife Deloris (his onetime partner), his son Geoff (a burgeoning warlock) and his daughter Vivian (a young witch). In the effort to protect his family from the vengeance seeking monsters of his past he has also tried to stymie their abilities. All that is about to change.

Another partner from his past is Lucas, now a werewolf after an accident years ago when they hunted together. Lucas has come to Frederick to let him know that he’s seen Frederick’s wife hanging about with Merle Cope, someone that Frederick has little affection for and who he knows would like to see him dead. Something is afoot and we won’t find out for sure in this collection what that is.

At the same time all of this is happening Frederick’s children have a strong desire to get into the old family business. With Vivian having just completed high school and Geoff out for a year now, they practice in secret and are now about to let Frederick know they want to follow in his footsteps. But before any of this can be settled Deloris is injured and hospitalized, possibly by a character called Dante, or robot face, that Frederick sealed away years ago.

The story is intriguing to say the least and as with most Niles projects feels more like a movie than a comic series. The artwork doesn’t fall into the standard heroes in tights style most comics are filled with, instead going for the painted like artwork as done here by Damien Worm. It fits the story being told completely and gives it the right vibe for what is to come.

If you’re like me, coming to this series late or holding off to read the compilations found in volumes like this, then you’ll find yourself having a good time with this one. My guess is that you’ll end up picking up the series though once you finish, wanting to know not only what happens after this portion ends but to see what becomes of the Allan family as they move forward. A good series and a solid compilation.
