Good choice for USMLE

High Yield Biochemistry is the perfect book for a one or two day board review. It is easy reading without the complex charts and detail needed in the first year of medical school. The book does miss some major points. Vitamin overdoses are weak, as are some major disorders/deficiencies like Diabetes, G6pdh, Hbs/Hbc, and purine salvage.

In need of serious revision...

I purchased several of the high yield and brs reviews for dental boards. As far as the high yield series goes, this one is by far the worst. Most of what is in this book is really basic info, like stuff you learned in Cell Biology as an undergraduate student. It may get you through the boards, but I really doubt this alone could help achieve a high score. Either save your twenty-five bucks and use your class notes, or buy another review text...cause this one sucks!

Nicely summed up by the reviewer below. If you need a very quick-and-dirty review, this is good. I take points off due to the lack of index and some weak sections. At this point, QBank leads me to believe that this book may not cover everything I needed to know.. but good for last minute stuff, especially if you hate Biochem like myself.

and the price was excellent. I was surprised that the book appeared to ...

I purchased this book used, and the price was excellent. I was surprised that the book appeared to be new when it arrived (although I did find one page that had underlining written on it). However, after a few days the book started to fall apart. Now that I am three weeks into my course, I am ready to just put all the pages into a binder as they will not stay put. On top of that, I have found errors in the text. Specifically, I noted an incorrect answer in the Self-Check section in the back, so I informed my classmates. It seems that I have a first printing of the text, and some errors have been corrected for subsequent printings, but I have no way of know what corrections have been made. It seems like an errata sheet should have bee published and provided. (The books of some of my classmates did NOT have the wrong answers in the back, and that is a true indication that corrections were made in later printings of the same edition.) I do plan to contact the publisher to ask about an errata sheet, and I recommend anyone purchasing this text used do the same.

This book does a decent job at what it claims...As for the print and binding quality, I will have to rate that pretty poor. Mine has not fallen apart yet, but I have several friends who used the same book for class, and pages are already falling out. Unfortunately, if you have to get the book, I'm not sure there's a way around this, but it's something to expect. It is not (and does not proport to be) an introduction to research generally. It is an intro do Education/Psychology type research involving human subjects. Some of the information such as how to find a journal article you could just find out from a librarian, or by searching around online a bit, but there is a lot of terminology relating to epistemologies, and other field-specific terms for Education/Psyc type research. Overall a decent book, takes a while to get through, but not difficult material by any means.

The title characters of this rich, furiously concentrated first novel, set in Paris during the student uprisings of 1968, are 17-year-old twins Guillaume and Danielle and their friend Matthew, a 19-year-old American film student studying at the Cinematheque Francaise. Living in a huge apartment and virtually unnoticed by their father and his new wife, bored sophisticates Guillaume and Danielle pursue an obsessive incestuous relationship that becomes even more complicated when sexually confused Matthew moves in; in the author's deft phrasing, he is in love "with the single person Guillaume and Danielle would have been had they not been born twins." On their own, the three explore avenues of homosexuality, rape, incest and sadism that pull them away from the outside world and into starved, frightened squalor. When they finally reemerge, the Paris they see is almost unrecognizable. Adair depicts this scorching sexual triangle and the games that lead into it with knife-point psychological precision and gorgeously spun prose, but he also portrays the teenagers with a compassion that keeps the title (a reference to Cocteau's The Holy Terrors , which parallels and clearly inspires this work) from being wholly ironic.

The Original

The best part about this edition is that it is the author's original version. Gilbert Adair, while writing the screenplay for Bernardo Bertolucci's 2003 film adaptation, revised this novel more to his liking and re-published it under the title The Dreamers (another change the author preferred). For a completest, this is a necessary read. Its a real treat to compare both versions of the novel as a physical example of creative evolution. Paired with the film there is an enriching gradation from original novel to screenplay to film to revised novel. I found a mint copy (hardcover for $60 at an amazing rare bookstore) so I don't know why these are all priced quite so high but if you gotta have it, then you gotta have it. You wont regret it.

Intense and unforgettable

The story of a US student drawn into the fantastical lives of twins during the street riots of Paris in 1968. Matthew is soon partaking in erotic affairs of the French brother and sister. A story that is utterly evocative of the entire era, with free love and liberal thoughts, with a sprinkling of music and old movies described in detail by an obvious fan of those mediums. Adair has written a controversial masterpiece. This was filmed a few years ago quite faithfully, to the credit of the filmmakers, who didn't shy away from the sexual content (thanks to the willingness of the young actors involved).The Dreamers (Original Uncut NC-17 Version)

If you like Cocteau, and you like "Pierre" by Melville, and you like "The Kiss" by K.Harrison then these "punters" ought to be just your cuppa tea. Nothing like a little incest rendered into "art" to keep things moving in a healthy direction. In short...these are just my kind of people and I enjoyed spending time with them. Also...this books obeys the first law of show business to the "nth degree" which is of course..."Always Leave Them Wanting MORE!!!" This little tome is short, sweet, and complete. Bravo...Bravo!
