Wonderful resource for readers of Lewis
By Amazon Customer
Having experienced a weekend retreat on C.S. Lewis given by Will Vaus, I was somewhat hesitant to read this book because I was unsure that the pages could come close to the expereince and insight gained by personal interaction with the author. I was pleasantly surprised and would recommend this book to anyone who has experienced the works of C.S. lewis. It could be argued that going to the original sources by Lewis is the only way to experience his works; however, not having the time to read all of his works immediately, Will gives the reader a wonderful look inside the mind and thoughts of the premier Christian writer of the 20th century. What a treasure and wonderful resource whether reading the Chronicles with your children or doing scholarly research into the thoughts and theology of C.S. Lewis. The way that Will is able to take scholarly material and present it in an engaging way to readers at all levels is very beneficial.

I can recommend this book without reservation.

Who's the audience?
By Jeffrey A. Thompson
I have read Lewis for years and enjoyed him immensely. When I started reading this book, I kept asking myself, "Who is the audience?" People well read in Lewis will know most of the material presented. People who are curious about Lewis should just read Lewis. To me this book is just a good reference work for some limited applications.

The author does present the material in a very accessible form. He writes in a very clear and friendly manner. He has short chapters on different topics like marriage, sex, salvation, God, and the incarnation. You can tell the author's real affection for Lewis's writings. The real advantage of this book is that the author references materials that the average fan of Lewis does not read: the letters, sermons and talks. Another benefit of this book is that the author shows how Lewis changed his theology over his life time.

The main problem with the book is, using Lewisian terms, the book spends too much time "looking at," instead of "looking alongside." The book feels too much like a research paper and does not encourage the reader to enjoy the magic of Lewis for themselves.

I have a website on C. S. Lewis and I get questions all the time about these topics. Frankly, this book is much better than my website and I will probably quote from it in my FAQ section. If you have questions about what Lewis believed on certain theological topics, this book will be a very good guide. However, reading Lewis is the very best method and the most fun way to find out what Lewis thought.

A Great Resource
By L. M. Beamer
I've dabbled with reading C.S. Lewis's works for years, and while they intrigue me, I've often found the content intellecutally intimidating. What a treat "Mere Theology" has been for me! Breaking down Lewis's thoughts by topic, it's been a great resource, giving me invaluable insights that will undoubtedly benefit me when I return to Lewis's original works. The author has done an excellent job of presenting the material in an organized, reader-friendly and meaningful fashion.

Black and White and Read All Over
By A Customer
The dust jacket for The Run of His Life is pure black on one side and pure white on the other. From the outset of the bizarre, ever-televised story, O.J. Simpson's defense lawyers sought to exploit race, and of course they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams through a combination of amazing luck and sheer audacity.

The purpose of this book is clearly not to change any minds about the substantial issues of the case itself, about which everyone seems to be intractable. Even though Toobin is one of the more objective (though not uninvolved) observers of the case and his point of view rings more true than that of the participants, the stereotypical white reader will agree with most of what's in this book, and the stereotypical black reader will find many faults.

The main value of this book is as a fascinating picture of the machinations behind the public events and of the personalities involved, and as an integrated narrative of the essentials of the story. It was utterly engaging to this reader, who followed the trial fairly closely, but it would be of great interest to anyone looking for first-rate coverage of the ultimate modern American fiasco.

It's simply an amazing story, not just about a murder case, of course, and not just about race, but also about celebrity (Simpson's, the lawyers, the witnesses, etc.) and the ramifications of race for the central celebrity, who once said in an interview, "I'm not black, I'm O.J." Johnny Cochran may be right that race affects everything in America, but for O.J. Simpson, his celebrity and wealth had an overriding impact on everything in his life, a life which even before the murders was evidently a hollow and tawdry one. Even if Simpson had been unequivocally proven innocent, his image would have still suffered from the revelations of a life filled with sycophants, ever-seedier commercial endorsements, and of course spousal battery and abuse.

Toobin provides some very fascinating background on all the major players, including the LAPD, and he makes a totally convincing case that far from there being a conspiracy against Simpson, there was incredible favoritism afforded him by police, especially in the domestic violence complaints against him and even in the murder case.

But even this white reader found himself often wondering what Toobin's sources were for many seemingly inobservable events. His list of sources at the back of the book doesn't name any interview subjects, and only on rare occasions does he attribute anything specifically in the narrative itself. For example, in the description of events leading to the infamous glove demonstration, he writes: "Clark thought about saying something, risking the humiliation of her colleague by saying, 'No! Stop!' But she kept her seat." Did Marcia Clark, a lead prosecutor, tell him this herself? (And is she likely to be telling the truth?) He doesn't say.

Given the huge axes being ground by all the parties (and even those not directly involved), one wonders about many such accounts in this book. Another example is the description of a jailhouse meeting between Simpson and three of his lawyers, F. Lee Bailey, Robert Kardashian and Skip Taft, on the night before the verdict, in which dialog is quoted which makes it clear that Simpson had already learned of the verdict via the L.A. Sheriff's department grapevine. (The Sheriff's department guarded Simpson and was also in charge of the sequestered jury.) Even though the account is plausible and there isn't any clear reason for anyone to lie, Toobin was obviously not present and the integrity of the parties is in doubt.

The main revelation to this reader was the degree to which a fair trial was impossible given the incredible attention to it and the pressure this exerted on all parties, especially the jury. Toobin readily refutes claims by jurors that race didn't play a role in their decision. He quotes from Johnny Cochran's closing argument: "Your verdict goes far beyond the doors of this courtroom. That's not to put any pressure on you, just to let you know what is really happening out there." Toobin writes: "It was, one supposes, just a sort of courtesy to warn the jurors what their lives might be like if they happened to vote to convict this man." Given the incredibly polarized public reactions to the verdict, this is a very crucial point -- picture prosecutor Chistopher Darden being spat on by black brothers and sisters outside the courtroom. In such a situation, one cannot expect from ordinary people a reasoned decision based solely on the evidence, especially given the room for doubt (if not "reasonable doubt") in this case. In the words of juror Carrie Bess just after the jury was excused after the reading of the verdict: "We've got to protect our own."

The definitive book on the trial of the century - a must read
By Justbooking
In what may prove to be the definitive book on the trial of the century, New Yorker writer Jeffrey Toobin leaves no stone unturned to prove that O.J. Simpson was guilty of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman.

The premise of the book is simple. OJ was guilty - his lawyers knew it and the evidence, overwhelming. The case was the prosecution's to lose. Which they did, through their incompetence and sheer arrogance, he argues. Granted, the defense played the race card from the get go - Toobin himself was the first to flush out their strategy early on and make it public through his explosive article in the The New Yorker.

Through vivid recounting of the murder trial and behind-the-scenes look at the lives and testimony of the main participants and witnesses, Toobin gives a far more vivid account than that found in other books, most notably Marcia Clark's "Without a Doubt," presenting a solid case for OJ's guilt in the last chapter.

The amount of preparation that went into this book - with over 200 interviews - shows how meticulous Toobin was in his research. It's no accident that he was the first reporter to uncover the infamous Furhman personnel files and bring them to the attention of the Defense (unbeknown to him, the lawyers had already found these.) Why not talk with the prosecution about these first?

Unfortunately, Toobin does not hide his disdain for the prosecution - to the point that you wonder if they even granted him an interview. Almost all references to Marcia Clark are exceedingly negative - with regards to her appearance, arrogance, tardiness, aggressiveness towards witnesses, stubbornness ("she was going with her gut"), at times desperate attitude, even her way of speaking, always "ranting," "sputtering" and "snarling." Also exposed are her bout with an eating disorder and her estrangement from her parents, all tabloid fodder but for effects of this trial, are probably not that relevant - they're not even mentioned in her book, as in "it's none of your business."

Christoper Darden, another prosecutor, fares no better as Toobin spares no chance in attacking and belittling him, comparing him time and time again to the older and wiser Johnnie Cochran Jr., defense lawyer for OJ Simpson. Darden is referred to as amateurish, impetuous, splay-footed, skinny, shell-shocked, pouty, and at one point, emotionally and intellectually inferior to Cochran. Ouch.

Judge Ito, central figure to the case, makes it through the book with surprisingly little criticism, regarded as placid, tolerant, if somewhat star-struck. Most decisions made by him are legally correct, although the author does concede that he lost control of the proceedings many a time, allowing the trial to run for far too long.

In comparison, the author provides a wealth of information about the lives of all the defense lawyers, the good and the bad. Shapiro comes off as a likable, somewhat smarmy but breezy lawyer desperate to keep himself in the limelight and protect his reputation at all costs. Cochran is "pontifical" and clearly inspires awe, "eyes ablaze, full of blustering vitality," especially when at the end of the trial he surrounds himself with bodyguards. A telling account of lunchtime at the Criminal Courts building cafeteria, which was almost deserted on the last day of the trial, puts things in perspective, with Toobin and another reporter at one table, Shapiro sitting alone at another table, and Cochran and three other defense lawyers sitting at a third table surrounded by a circle of grim-faced bodyguards, their presence "merely ludicrous with only two reporters and a cashier to monitor for false moves."

Although an excellent and meticulously researched book, it really needs to be read together with Clark's "Without a Doubt," to get a more balanced view of the case from the prosecutions' perspective and understand why many of the so-called errors (such as the composition of the jury and selection of witnesses who did and did not testify) actually had solid legal and strategic reasons behind them. In a way, Clark's book is a rebuttal of the book written by Toobin, who she referred to as "the kid from the New Yorker."

They both agree Simpson was guilty. That the Defense did a lot of fancy footwork and some downright dirty tricks. But in the end, the reasons of why the jury acquitted are left for the reader to decide. Was it because they were clearly biased towards Simpson from the start, as Clarke believes, or was it because they feared reprisals to their loved ones if they convicted O.J. in a heavily charged atmosphere of racial tension in L.A., as Toobin alleges?

Somewhere in between the two accounts probably lies the truth of what really happened.

The Run of His Life is about race
By william woolum
Jeffrey Toobin has no doubt that O. J. Simpson killed his wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ron Goldman. Therefore, the driving question of the book is not "did he commit the crime?", the question is "why was he acquitted?". Toobin's thesis grows out of local Los Angeles history as well as national U. S. history. Los Angeles is a microcosm of the United States because it is a city, just as ours is a nation, divided along racial lines. Toobin's study makes it quite clear that what is at issue in this divide, more than opportunity, more than economics, more than political clout, is trust. Distrust runs deep between the races. In Los Angeles, this distrust defined the jury and shaped the jury's verdict. Toobin explores how the defense formulated a strategy to exploit this racial divide and how the prosecution minimized or ignored how feelings and perceptions borne of racial identity would effect this trial. As the familiar story unfolds, Toobin details the prosecution's very strong case against Simpson. For the prosecution, the crime was in the details: hairs, fibers, blood drops, blood smears, gloves, footprints. But could this jury trust the gatherers and interpreters of this evidence? No. They didn't trust the police, criminalists, or lab technicians. They didn't trust Marcia Clark. They didn't trust a system of police and prosecution and the reason was historical racial mistreatment. Yes, Toobin examines the conflicts between attorneys. He examines the performance of Lance Ito. He evaluates the attorneys' performances on both sides. But what he does best is illuminate the insidious consequences of of our country's long history of racial mistreatment. In this case, argues Toobin, a murderer walked free.

The Black Tulip (Oxford World's Classics), by Alexandre Dumas

A deceptively simple story and the shortest of Dumas's most famous novels, The Black Tulip (1850) weaves historical events surrounding a brutal murder into a tale of romantic love. Set in Holland in 1672, this timeless political allegory draws on the violence and crimes of history, making a case against tyranny and creating a symbol of justice and tolerance: the fateful tulipa negra.

The Song of the Flowers
By B. Morse
While The Black Tulip lacks the swashbuckling, derring-do adventures of the other Dumas novels I have read, it is every bit as enjoyable to read.

Beginning with the arrest of two brothers, deemed traitors to the throne, Dumas Holland-based story at least begins with as strong a conflict as his other more action-laced novels. But the story, while shifting focus to the Godson of one of the men arrested, concerns his passion and pursuit of the highly coveted black tulip, a strain of Holland's most popular horticultural export. Cornelius van Baerle, a man of comfortable means, is little concerned with his wealth, or with position; or at all suspicious of the papers left in his care by his Godfather prior to his arrest. M. van Baerle has but one pursuit, one goal, and one dream...to produce a flawless, rare black tulip.

Thus his downfall, as an avaricious neighbor,Isaac Boxtel, shares this dream, but for entirely different reasons. While Cornelius van Baerle cares not for the riches and fame associated with growing such a flower, Boxtel covets both and plots to eliminate his competition and abscond with the delicate blossom which will net him one hundred thousand florins, more than enough to live like the King himself.

M. van Baerle is, therefore, convicted of treason when Boxtel reveals the existence of the papers of va Baerle's godfather to the authorities, and M. van Baerle finds himself on the wrong side of prison bars.

However, the appearance of an unexpected love awakens passions in Cornelius to rival those he feels for the black tulip, and ignites a desire in him to share the possible wealth associated with the flower, simply to assure it's development and care.

Thus, the race is on to plant, grow, and deliver the black tulip to the Horticultural Society.

Dumas' writing skills are in fine form with this shorter novel, sparing none of the humor, grace, and elegance of other works of his I have indulged in. And while foils are left in scabbards, no plots to overthrow a corrupt Cardinal materialize, and revenge is not sought against the bad-guys...this novel is every bit as exciting.

A fine way to experience one of France's most prolific historical authors for the first time, or to further explore his catalogue of works.

Flower power
By Harry Hughes
This book is not to be recomended by those who want an exciting swashbuckling tale on a par with Dumas' incomparable musketeer stories. It is to this end that many reviewers and readers of this book leave with an unfriendly opinion of this book. Although it is Dumas' last book, it is in my opinion one of his best. It tells the heartwarming tale of Cornelius van Baerle who lives purely to try and cultivate the rare and wonderous black tulip. However when Cornelius' godfather is asassinated he, without knowing it, enters a dangerous game of cat and mouse with his jealous neighbour (and tulip fancier) Issac Boxtel who has seen Cornelius being given a letter by his godfather. To this end Cornelius is jailed whereupon he falls in love with Rosa, the beautiful daughter of his jailer. Rosa aids Cornelius to cultivate his tulip inside the jail and they eventually succeed only to have it cruely stolen by Boxtel. I wont ruin the ending by telling you what happens, suffice to say I feel that for the first time in his writing career Dumas wrote a "Happy ever after" ending which irritated me to some extent. I do love this book and it earns its place alongside Dumas' great novels, my main reason for loving it so much is its final lines, it is one of the greatest pieces of philosophy I have ever heard, but it is important to read the book to fully understand its meaning, I know it so well that I can reel it off the top of my head thus, " ... he wrote above his door these lines that Grotius had carved on the wall of his prison on the day of his escape: "Sometimes one has suffered enough to have the right never to say: I am too happy"
To me these words have a beautiful resonance that is not only lovely to think of but accurate as well, I feel that anyone who reads this book and fails to be moved, if by nothing else by the bathos of the denoument, then they have ultimately failed to appreciate the true beauty and skill of one of the finest novelists to ever pick up a writing implement. This book is a thing of beauty, perhaps the tulip itself is a simple microcosm of the book, to start off it appears to be nothing special, but in the hands of someone who is aware of its true worth it is as priceless as the world itself.

A Subtle Novel
By A Customer
A blend of politics, human psychology, subtle romance, and (both real and fictionalized) history. The beginning of the novel is interesting but a little dense and readers may get discouraged, especially as the sentences are fairly complex. However it gets much easier and flows much quicker when the story picks up with the introduction of Van Baerle and his neighbor. I encourage you to keep reading if you are interested in its following key points:
-- The characters are incredibly believable and have developed personalities that are realistically complex.
-- The depiction of tragedy, justice, despair are noteworthy.
-- The story is rich and flows smoothly.
-- It's an interesting look at the past, especially the politics and the references to the tulip-craze of Europe some hundreds of years ago. Even though it has fictional elements it still feels like you're holding a slice of the past in your hand.
-- I've always hated romances, but the love in this story is carefully drawn with a subtle touch and depicted with realism. Genuinely entertaining.
-- It's depiction of the ways that popular opinion can be swayed and deceived by politics, nationalism, and patriotism is chilling.
-- It simultaneously shows us human nobility and human pettiness.
When I first picked up this book I didn't expect much. When I finished it I realized how much the impression it made lasts with me.

Commodity Algorithms and Data Structures In C++: Simple and Useful, by Dmytro Kedyk

Algorithms and data structures are the core of computer science and an important tool in other fields like statistics. A commodity algorithm is like a commodity in economics: it's correct, easy to understand, applicable to many problems, efficient, and free of intellectual property claims. This book covers all commodity algorithms and data structures learned in an algorithms class and many that aren't including randomized algorithms, large number arithmetic, external memory algorithms, numerical methods, optimization, string algorithms, and data compression. Each algorithm and data structure is described clearly, completely, and concisely with text and full tested C++ code. Most descriptions have examples, illustrations, performance analysis, use cases, and suggestions for optimizations and extensions. Many topics in this book appear only in specialized books and papers, including garbage-collecting freelists, collections of random number generators and hash functions for different use cases, priority queues that allow indexing, cyclic redundancy check algorithm, simplex method for linear programming, efficient dictionaries for variable length keys, simulated annealing, Monte Carlo method, and algorithms for reinforcement learning. This is the book the author wishes he had when he started studying algorithms.

Something different
By Linda
This short book is written in a somewhat unusual way. The cover is gorgeous, though I don't understand the bottom part. Exposition of all topics is very compact, but apparently complete and there is C++ code with almost every algorithm and data structure. Topic selection is also a bit unusual, for example I was hoping to see compact red-black tree code, but instead there is a one line mention of a study that found another tree data structure called treap superior to red-black tree along with detailed presentation of this data structure. I glanced at my copy of Knuth and saw that he plans to cover treap in his next edition, so maybe it is indeed a better choice.

Also for a 200-something page book it covers very many topics. There are chapters on Monte Carlo and external memory algorithms which I have not seen in other books. As such this book seems to be offering an original approach rather than create another copycat of Knuth/Cormen. There are no exercises or questions for readers in this book, but I am considering using it for the algorithm's class I will teach this fall.

There are specialized books for topics like machine learning and optimization, but this is the first book where I see clean C++ code for neural networks and the back-propagation math is somehow explained in one paragraph. Definitely a worthy addition to my computing book collection. Hopefully this one will force the Knuth/Cormen/Sedgewick/Weiss classics update their coverage.

Could have been an amazing algorithms book
By modern c++'ser
This could have potentially been one of the best algorithmic books. It covers a wide variety of topics including some non standard (but non the less important) topics that are otherwise not covered in any other book. The bonus is that it contains well written modern c++ code. So why the 2 stars ? Because the author makes no attempts to explain the topics in fullness, or even partially.
It seems that the author wanted to get the explanations part out of the way so he can code some more.
The sentences are incomplete and instead the author uses mathematical notations. The Author assumes that the reader understands many subtleties in math and CS (which is for the most part incorrect) and skips those explanations as well. So, if you have the patience to figure out yourself what the code in this book does (based on the title of the chapter) then you'll enjoy it. Otherwise, like in my case this book will decorate the shelf.

I used LP for 15yrs, but this one is HORRIBLE
By Bogie D
HORRIBLE - they recommend several hostels about 15 feet from train tracks with trains blowing their horn at 2330pm at night and 630am in the morning
I've been getting the lonely planet guides for 15 years, but the latest Peru one it's HORRIBLE. It's so obvious the writer got paid to hide negative things.
The hostel in Cusco, Intro Hostel plays loud music on speakers till 11pm at night
The hostel 1990 in Lima their prices are DOUBLE than in your book and double from their neighbors, JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THE GUIDE
