The Aeronaut’s Windlass shares the story of Cinder Spire as it enters the cusp of a war between the Spire Albion and the Spire Aurora. Filled with airships, steam powered and crystal technology Butcher paints a vivid world and introduces us to characters from all occupations within Cinder Spires. We enter the story as the war begins and Butcher allowed me to easily immerse myself in their story.

Butcher shares the story using third person limited perspectives of multiple characters. While Captain Grimm mentioned in the synopsis above is a focus, he is not the only key character. We also spend significant time with Cadets- Bridget Tagwynn, a butcher’s daughter and Gwen Lancaster, a daughter of privilege who is hilarious without trying to be. Then there is Lieutenant Benedict Sorellin-Lancaster, Gwen’s cousin. Two of my favorite perspectives came from Folly the Etherialist apprentice and from those of Rowl a member of the house of Nine Claws. Rowl is a smug, hilarious, brilliant cat. Yep, you heard me, a cat. He is quite the little hero and travels with Bridget as her protector. He is also heir to his clan. They all find themselves working together as a team and I enjoyed all the different dynamics they brought to the table.

The world Butcher has built is complex, beautiful and home to many unknowns. Cinder Spires is located in the mist above a planet that is uninhabitable by humans and overrun with monsters. *shivers* I will not spoil it for you, but these monsters are sure to make you freak out. Butcher does not subject the reader to large information dumps, instead we learn through the characters. When we find out about the surface of the planet and the monsters, we are out with Bridget, Folly and Rowl. Butcher effortlessly weaved it into the conversation leaving my jaw hanging. While I am unsure of where we are, the world is vaguely familiar to Victorian London particularly with the social classes.

The Aeronaut’s Windlass with its steampunk goodness and colorful character was an excellent beginning to this new series. Things are not completely revealed to us, but Butcher drop hints about characters, the past, of darkness to come and the economy. While I still have many questions in particular what prompted the war itself I was satisfied with the world and the knowledge we are given even as I crave more. Great Book! Terrible edition!!!

One of my favorite books ever but this long awaited ebook edition of the Master Frederik Pohl's wonderful book has so many transcription and editing (if there was any editing/review at all) mistakes that a reader not familiar with the story and context and dialogue would be tempted to throw it away. This is a clear example of what can go wrong with e-books when put in the hands of sloppy people who are only looking at the commissions they will earn.
Frederik Pohl had written this seminal book and it's follow up series that just had a new book last year published is a wild, exciting, terrifying and unpredictable story. It is the classic story of terrible poverty driving people to gamble with what little life they might have. It is a story of luck and happenstance over all other factors.
Clean up this book with a good reviewer reader and editor and publish it again. Send out a refund on this e-book edition and then send out the corrected book to every e-book buyer.

It won both the Huge and Nebula for a reason

There's some issues with this book -- let's get this out up front -- the way the author views women, sex, and sexuality are all a bit, well, a product of his time. However, the world he builds is amazing, the characters are interesting, and it won both the Hugo and Nebula for a reason. Read it.

Entertaining and Mysterious at first - then not

The story captures you, keeps you entertained, then gets twisted up in sexual relationships that are difficult to believe or buy into. You discover the main character is hostile and quite misogynistic and unlikeable, especially toward the end of the book. I've read a lot of science fiction and this is the worst and quite uninspiring, leave me feeling empty as a reader. I have a hard time understanding how so many readers enjoyed this read.

Born February 2, 1905, Ayn Rand published her first novel, We the Living, in 1936. Anthem followed in 1938. Myth mashing of the highest order.

This book is a wonderful collection of 26 articles written by Ayn Rand (20 articles total), Nathaniel Branden (2), Alan Greenspan (3) and Robert Hessen (1). The 26 count includes the two articles in the appendix by Ayn Rand: "MAN'S RIGHTS" and "THE NATURE OF GOVERNMENT". I do have one criticism of this book but I will save it until the end here. All 26 articles relate in one way or another to the theme that 100% Laissez-faire Capitalism is the best Political-Economic system for mankind and that this fact is unknown to most people in the World --including most people in the United States. The first 13 articles deal with the THEORY AND HISTORY of Capitalism along with the opening article being true to form Ayn Rand: she defines her terms right away. Here she does it by positing and then answering the question: "WHAT IS CAPITALISM?". The next 12 articles deal with and destroy so many myths about capitalism that it is probably safe to say that anyone who reads this book will find at least 12 of their own myths about capitalism somewhere within the book. The next 11 articles (#14 through #24) deal with the CURRENT STATE of the United States in the mid 1960's and it is amazing how pertinent and informative these articles still are today. For example, for pertinence see article #20, "THE NEW FASCISM: RULE BY CONSENSUS", and for the informative see and discover the correct definition of 'freedom' on the first page of the article titled "CONSERVATISM: AN OBITUARY". There is simply too much good in this book to cover it all in one short review. It is a must read for anyone who is serious about politics and economics. Even if you disagree you will be compelled to think about your own position and attempt to solidify your thoughts about it after reading this book. The two ending (APPENDIX) articles speak for themselves and either alone is worth the price of the book. All the articles in the book were written and copyrighted in the 1960's and the book itself as collection of these articles was first published in 1967. Back then, and this is my only criticism, back then Capitalism WAS an Unknown Ideal, but today thanks to Ayn Rand and others, including the contributors to this book, Capitalism is now the KNOWN ideal, consequently the books title is not quite as accurate as it was when first published.

Good Book, on "being generous with Other People's money"

Ayn Rand is not the only person who authored this books' essays. The works of Nathaniel Branden and Alan Greenspan both are worth the price. These two authors do not emphasize the "moral" aspect of capitalism but its bare bones practicalities. And as such nobody has ever been able to shoot their arguments down, on moral grounds or otherwise.
In one essay, Branden dissects the criticisms of capitalism during the Industrial Revolution. He shows the relationship between the Industrial Revolution and the Population Explosion. More to the point he shows how Capitalism improved peoples' lives--by providing more sustenance for people to live on.
Alan Greenspan's Essay "Gold and Economic Freedom" is a masterpiece frequently quoted elsewhere, but origionates with this book. If you want to know how the Fed kept inflation down throughout Greenspan's reign as Chairman, here's the essence of his philosophy and modus operandi in a few pages. Greenspan also in another essay explains how corrupt monopolies cannot exist--without the help of government.
Rand herself, while sometimes going overboard on the "Morality" side, does make some very valid points in two essays in particular: "The Roots of War", and "Man's Rights." The theme of both is "being generous with other people's fortunes." (If I had the ability to take all of your money, I will show you just how compassionate to the world I can be.)
In "Roots of War" Rand explains that, outside of voluntary charity there are two ways to acquire something: take it, or swap something for it. Conquest or trade. There is no other option. Government is the agent of conquest, capitalism the agent of trade. She also shows the logical progression of each. In a conquest driven society, the pick pocket beats the honest man, but the robber beats the pick pocket, and the murderer beats the robber. Welfare states are not based on altruism but quite the opposite, and will eventually either collapse or look elsewhere for plunder. In a trade society, those who offer the best value win.
In "Man's Rights" she goes over the same concepts as in the Roots of war but more on the individual's level. She also discusses how "Rights" have gone from claims you have on your own life to claims someone else has on your life, and its potential consequences.
Finally, "Extremism--or the Art of Smearing", is a powerful essay on how left-leaning collectivists smear their opponents. Change the names and you've got the exact same thing occuring today, but this essay was written in 1964! Goes to show that the fundamental tactics of collectivists have not changed in at least 35 years.
All in all a very good book.

Best Ayn Rand Book Yet !

I wish that someone would have turned me on to this woman back when I was a lot younger, then I wouldn't' just be learning about the country I grew up in. This book brings to light what was right in front of me but wasn't visible while trying raise my family. A real eye opener for us dense folks and in such easy to understand logical format. Best Ayn READ to date!!!

Great Book - A must read for anyone who uses water

In the book George succintly describes how a combination of three events - global population growth, shrinking water storage due to reservoir sedimentation and a dramatic decline in the construction of new dams is resulting in an alarming decrease in water availability. The book reviews the potential effects of climate change, discusses the challenges with conservation, the concept of sustainable development and provides solutions. Best of all in this age of misinformation George bases his conclusions on facts - not opinions. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand where their water comes from and more importantly what needs to be done to keep it coming.

Dr. Annandale makes a compelling case for technical solutions to global water supply problems in terms of sustainability, climate variability, and market factors. The concepts described are based on sound scientific and engineering principles and aimed at the most critical parts of the earth that are becoming over-populated despite declining adequate water supplies. The book includes enough technical content and references included to satisfy the scientists and engineers, but it's written to make it a good read for non-technical people who want to understand water supply problems and possible solutions.

About the Author
In 1967 Angus Wootten retired from the United States Army. In the course of that eventful year he met Sid Roth. Sid was a Jew who was not practicing Judaism, Angus was not practicing Catholicism. These two ultimately ended up being in business together. From the secular side it was an investment business, from the non-secular, it became a business that was mightily used to help fund the foundational efforts of Messianic Judaism.

In the early Seventies, Angus, and his wife Batya, were involved with Sid and a small group of Messianic Jews in the founding of Beth Messiah, in the Washington D.C., area - it being one of the first Messianic Jewish Congregations. They also worked with Sid in his founding of the Messianic Vision, a ministry to all who were interested in the phenomenon of Jews accepting Jesus as their Messiah, yet retaining their Jewish traditions.

In 1977, to further the purposes of the Messianic Vision, Batya established the House of David as a bookstore/catalogue company. The "business" was primarily funded by her husband, Angus. The store needed someone to fund it because it specialized in materials and books about Israel, the Jewish people, Christians, and how they all relate. At the time, interest in the subject matter was marginal at best. Some even reacted to it with hostility.

Because Batya felt a responsibility to know what the materials they were offering said, she read countless books about the subject of Israel. Much to her dismay, she discovered a wide variance of opinion about Israel's true role in the world, its future, and most important, about Israel's identity. She felt, to say the least, stymied.

Batya and Angus had endless discussions about "Israel." Then, being in spiritual anguish over the matter, Batya began to cry out in earnest to her Heavenly Father, asking Him for His answer to her ever-present question, "Who Is Israel?"

Necessarily incomplete!

Whereas Batya's book "Who is Israel?" dealt with the subject and how it intimately related to the Believer, Angus's book is a call to action. The problem is, he is working with unfulfilled prophecies. Consequently, when he wrote the book, he was working with the best available understanding that he had. He may be right on target, or he may be wrong in some respects. As we move ever closer to the last eventful 7 years of this present world age, we will see more clearly what is to happen. However, at least through Angus and Batya's efforts, we can be better watchmen and less likely to be caught by surprise. More prepared in other words. I will admit, it was somewhat annoying that Angus could not offer a more clear "battle plan", but that is for Abba to reveal to each individual Believer!!

This is an interesting book, but the scholarship is supplemented by some overstatement. One would certainly have to study it out point by point and not swallow it as a whole.

Fantastic quick read!

This book is a handful of vampire inspired stories from Ireland. As I find both topics entrancing, I had to have this book! And it did not disappoint. Sure, the tales are simple, and the book is an easy read. But I know I will be shivering under the covers tonight, thinking about those scary stories! Don’t pass this book by if either topic interests you.

I love it

It's one thing to continuously read about the English form of the vampire, but other countries have their own adaptations of the mythical monster too, and it's always fun to read about other monsters.

Find another book!

I've never written a review before but have become so frustrated I felt compelled to write. I had to buy this book for an endocrinology class and I also use it (well try to and almost always unsuccessfully) in my professional work. I find it completely disorganized and it is difficult to find any comprehensive information about any specific topic in the same place. For example, today I am researching the activational effects of sex hormones. A simple search for progesterone in the index points me to pages 14, 84, 128, 417, 439 and 448. Where is the comprehensive discussion about progesterone that does not require me to hunt for and piece together little (and I mean LITTLE) snippets of information? After searching each of those pages, I still have no better understanding than I started with. My mildly technical physiology book has more useful information. Others have discussed this book as useful if you read cover to cover but as reference material, it is consistently frustrating and essentially useless. Unless you are required to buy this book, I'd SERIOUSLY consider finding another. What's worse is that my Endocrinology prof didn't even use the book - what a waste of money.

I need a new endocrinology text

I've been using various editions of Hadley for quite a few years in the upper division/graduate level general endocrinology course I teach. I've never been particularly enamored of it but it's general and pretty comprehensive. Although the lectures I use have been generated and updated using Hadley and other sources, in checking my notes (PowerPoint pres.) this year I've noticed a number of glaring errors (see p. 317 for the most egregious/amazing; "...NE contracts the heart and forces blood out into the circulatory system. Acetylcholine, on the other hand, relaxes the heart so that it can again fill up with blood.")
So, if anyone can recommend a good general (although a previous reviewer refers to Hadley as being 'comparative,' it is not ... and I've largely ruled out Norris [too comparative] and Nelson [too behavioral], though both are fine books) Endo. text let me know. I'm in the biology dept. at the u. of Memphis.
