About the Author

John J. Wild is the Robert and Monica Beyer Professor of Business at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Professor Wild previously held appointments at the University of Manchester in England and Michigan State University. He received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.B.A. degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Teaching business courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Professor Wild has received several teaching honors, including the Mabel W Chipman Excellence in Teaching Award and the Beta Alpha Psi Excellence in Teaching Award. He is a prior recipient of national research fellowships from KPMG Peat Marwick and the Ernst and Young Foundation. He is also a frequent speaker at universities and at national and international conferences.

The author of more than 50 publications, in addition to three best-selling textbooks, Professor Wild conducts research on a wide range of topics, including corporate governance, capital markets, and financial analysis and forecasting. He is an active member of several national and international organizations, including the Academy of International Business, and has served as Associate Editor or editorial board member for several respected journals.

Kenneth L. Wild is affiliated with the University of London, England. He previously taught at Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester (UMIST) in England and his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Wild also undertook postgraduate work at Ecole des Affairs Internationale in Marseilles, France.

Having taught students of international business, marketing, and management at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Dr. Wild is a dedicated contributor to international business education. Jerry C. Y. Han is the Pong Ding Yuen Professor at the University of Hong Kong School of Business. He also holds appointments at several Chinese Universities, including Beijing University and Renmin University. Professor Han previously held appointments at the University of Buffalo, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Michigan State University, and National Chung Hsing University. He received his Bachelors degree from National Chung Hsing University, Masters degree from National Chengchi University, and Ph.D. from the University of Buffalo.

Welcome to the second edition of International Business. This book resulted from extensive market research with instructors and students at a wide range of institutions. We are delighted with the success of the first edition in that an overwhelming majority agrees with afresh approach to international business. This book forges a new path for international business, one that responds to the requests and needs of both instructors and students. A main goal in this second edition is to continue the progress made in the first—developing the most progressive, accessible, current, and customer-driven textbook on the market.

We know that international business is rich in people, culture, geography, politics, economics, and other human and environmental factors. This book draws upon this richness to present international business as it genuinely is—as a dynamic, culturally rich subject. This book goes beyond a "U.S. -centric" outlook and takes an inclusive view of international business by addressing its cultural aspects early and often. While it is appropriate for use in the introductory course at either the undergraduate or graduate level, International Business is written to give the instructor maximum flexibility in fitting different teaching styles and incorporating outside readings and cases—thereby increasing its scope and breadth as desired.

This book's approach to international business benefits students in several ways.

CULTURE EARLY AND OFTEN

Culture is an inescapable element of all international business activities. This book presents culture early (Chapter 2) and integrates it throughout every chapter of the book. This is partly accomplished by starting each chapter with a culture-rich opening company profile. Reading the opening company profiles in Chapters 1, 2, and 3 will wash away any doubt about this. We also integrate culture within each chapter by including lively examples that show how differences in culture affect international business activities.

International business is much more than a simple collection of separate business functions and environmental forces. Rather, it is an integrated whole consisting of national environments, the international environment, and business activities all interacting with one another. The model in the figure on page xx of this preface is unique to this book and lays the foundation for an integrated approach to international business. Feedback on the first edition tells us that students benefit by studying international business in this way—as it is in the real world. We first present the major components of national business environments and the international business environment. We then show how these environments interact with international business management, making international business different from purely domestic business.

INCLUSIVE

Appreciating the dynamic nature of the global marketplace requires an unbiased approach to international business. Feedback from the first edition shows that this is the only international business book written from a truly global perspective. This goal was achieved by members of an author team having collective expertise in three major economic regions of the world—Asia, Europe, and North America. This book also is written from a non-provincial viewpoint: Rather than "take sides" in key debates, it presents the viewpoints of each group or culture involved (see Chapter 2).

The success of the first edition of International Business was due to its culture-rich, integrative approach and its innovative features. This edition builds on those strengths and improves upon them in several ways. First, every chapter-opening company profile is new. Because of highly positive feedback on our chapter-opening company profiles in the first edition, we continue this approach but bring fresh culture-rich company profiles to our readers (see Chapters 1, 2, and 3). Second, every chapter-closing case is either new or updated. Third, all maps, figures, and tables reflect the most recently available data at the time of publication. Fourth, because of the positive response to the Investment Opportunity Notebook included in the first edition's Instructor's Resource Manual, it has been revised and expanded to include greater detail. Fifth, we have included a completely new set of video cases that emphasize the cultural aspects of international business.

In addition to these changes, here are some specific examples of improvements to the book:

Chapter2: Culture in Business

Responding to users' requests, we expanded and updated our discussion of culture. We did this by adding more and fresher examples to keep the presentation of culture's influence as current as possible. We also include extensive examples to show the application of the Hofstede and Kluckhohn-Strodtbeck frameworks for classifying cultures.

Chapter 4: Economic Systems and Development

We further streamlined the presentation of the different types of economic systems and economic development. In the second edition, we responded to your feedback and focus on certain country examples within the coverage of different systems. For example, when discussing central planning we include a special section on China's experience over the years and how it is adapting to market forces today.

Chapter 8: Regional Economic Integration

Based on feedback, we updated and streamlined our discussion of the major efforts toward regional economic integration around the world. The new presentation of the European Union (EU), for example, reflects less on the past events surrounding integration and more on key issues currently facing the EU such as future enlargement. For instance, we discuss the all-important Copenhagen Criteria that central and eastern European nations must satisfy before they will be considered for EU membership.

Chapter 10: International Monetary System

Feedback from the first edition tells us that instructors and readers want less discussion of the historical development of the international monetary system. Accordingly, we lessened the historical emphasis and focus on the present structure of the system. We also cover recent crises such as those in Russia and Argentina and the debate they are causing over the current system.

Chapter 11: Planning and Organizing International Operations

This chapter now appears before the chapter on analyzing international opportunities. We responded to your preference and moved the strategic and organizational coverage prior to market research activities. In this way, students get an appreciation for the larger issues international businesses face before getting into the details.

Chapters 14, 15, and 16

Although presentation of this material has been reorganized based on user feedback, it retains its tightly integrated flow. Accordingly, marketing issues are now separated from the coverage of other topics and reside in Chapter 14, Developing and Marketing Products. The popular section on acquiring physical resources now lies at the start of Chapter 15, Launching and Managing Production. After presenting important international production issues, Chapter 15 closes with a brief discussion of how companies finance their operations. As requested, Chapter 16, Hiring and Managing Employees, is now a stand-alone chapter but retains its integrated, sequential emphasis.

This book's coverage of international business follows the model shown in the figure below. Part One of this book discusses how the world's national economies are increasingly intertwined. We learn that as globalization penetrates further into national business environments, managers everywhere must take a global perspective on business activities.

In Part Two, we explore national business environments, showing how people's attitudes, values, beliefs, and institutions differ from one culture to another. We also explain how companies modify business practices and strategies when operating under different political, legal, and economic systems.

Good old-fashioned Realism to the rescue

Walt is a long-time proponent of Realism in international relations, publishing especially in the journal International Relations. This is his latest brief for U.S. foreign policy, and not only is it a rebuke of the Bush Administration's disastrous war on Iraq, "GWOT," and "preemptive war doctrine," which of course is really *preventive*, offensive war, but it outlines a more sensible course of action -- a strategy based on Realist principles.

The bulk of the book examines how the rest of the world is actually responding to U.S. primacy, and why, from the eminently logical point of view that countries pursue their own interests, not ours. Walt looks at examples of the whole range of possibilities, from balancing (including asymmetric strategies), to "balking" (footdragging), "binding" (to alliances, institutions and norms), and delegitimation (what we call in sociology a "framing" strategy), in the cases of Europe, China, Russia, Arab states, and the whole cast of characters on the world stage.

Only at the end, based on this primer on Realist analysis, does Walt turn to his eminently sensible prognosis for U.S. foreign policy. He indicts the failed Global Hegemony strategy of the Bush Administration, which has led to active attempts by virtually everyone else to counter the U.S. After a brief survey of the Selective Engagement strategy of the Bush Sr. and Clinton Administrations, he recommends a return to Offshore Balancing, which was U.S. strategy through most of its history, and which Walt says is perfectly suited to this (no doubt temporary) period of U.S. primacy. Offshore Balancing is not isolationism, but it would minimize permanent commitments and bases in places like Europe and Asia where our allies should take up their share of the common burden, and will in their own interest if forced to, according to Realist theory.

In lamenting the feckless Bush Administration policies that have put the U.S. in a deep hole in terms of its international standing and alliances, Walt observes that the U.S. is "a remarkably immature Great Power," and that "Americans remain remarkably ignorant of the world" (p. 245). In contrast to the spate of immature, ignorant books currently flooding the market, calling for a global War on Islam, among other amazing hare-brained ideas, TAMING AMERICAN POWER is a refreshing voice of sanity.

Back to the drawing board!

Ask folks outside the US if there is something wrong with it and what that is, and chances are that you'll get a good many little piece of the big puzzle characterizing the relationship between the US and the World. Since the "mission accomplished" moment, similar pieces have made it in the US media taxonomy, as high up as editorials. It is the merit of Stephen Walt's, to have been gathered a lot of little pieces in a framework that would capture the situation like this: 1) Why other states fear the US primacy? 2) What strategies can states pursue in response to US primacy? 3) What can the US do about #2? If not much can be debated about points #1 and #2 in Walt's framework, point #3 comes along the lines of a growing conversation meant to supplant the neocon doctrine, as the latter one loses steam by the day.It should be briefly noted that the answer to point #3 had preoccupied the US foreign policy makers even before the neocon doctrine - recall Clinton's 'indispensable nation.'

The relative novelty Professor Walt brings into consideration, when looking for answers to point #3, is the need for openness and public debate about the activity of political lobbies - especially those steering the US foreign policy. Michael Scheuer might have been the first one, in this round, to raise awareness about political lobbies as factor influencing the US foreign policy. However, it is only now that we have a proposal on how to deal with the shortcomings of what, Walt reminds us, is a fundamental feature of the American democracy - interest groups. It should also be added that, in a recent report on overall nations' business competitiveness, released by The World Economic Forum, the US occupies only the second place due also to the perceived negative influence of business lobbies on government policy. So, here we have a complementary instance where interest groups, the same ones Tocqueville was first to write about, are exacting their price on the American system.

I would sum up the value of this book in terms of: (a) Taking a snapshot of the world's perception of the US through the lens of the American foreign policy; (b) Building a framework of the relationships between the US and the other nations; (c) Bringing to public attention several prescriptions for maintaining US primacy while addressing (some of) the world's concerns. As for Walt's prescriptions for US foreign policy, the part of the book that's open widest to debate, only time will tell what and how. Somehow, I have a feeling, the next executive is taking notice.

A new genre of foreign policy writers is emerging in the United States. They are called "realists", but defining the term defies precision. Following the "neo-con" works extolling the idea of the US flexing its military and economic might came the "soft power" advocates. The latter declared that overbearing foreign policies were counterproductive. Power must be curbed or withdrawn in favour of more conciliatory policies, preferably multilaterally decided and applied. Stephen Walt's approach is a middle ground, without being conciliatory to either of the previous stances.

Walt opens with a summary of all the aspects of might available to the USA. This is the foundation of the "realist" genre - the power is there and Walt catalogues it nicely. The USA is at once the strongest power militarily and economically, influencing many by sheer presence. It has far outstripped whatever competition it might have had. A military defeat is out of the question and even economic challengers can only hope to share, not dominate, markets. The collapse of the Soviet Union left the USA in the role of world primacy. That unique position has led other nations to view such solitary might with distrust and resentment. Walt explains brilliantly why these countries are suspicious. Any nation confronted with such prowess will naturally be wary. He generally avoids value judgements in the depiction, but he notes how poorly informed the leaders and general populace of the USA are about the resentment. How other nations do and should react becomes the theme of most of Walt's remaining chapters.

Once he's described what he calls "the roots of resentment", Walt describes the reactions by nations uncomfortable with the USA's "primacy". He lists various "strategies of opposition" and "accommodation". Opposition to such prowess must range across many options. Can it be direct? Walt shows how resistance to US demands might depend on the severity of the issue, whether other distractions command greater attention or whether the resistance might reach across more than one nation. Excessive power is a fine tool for forging opposition alliances. Where open and direct alliances may be lacking or impractical, various forms of "balancing" may be established to offset US hegemony. The most extreme form of "balancing" is the terror attack, but many other methods are available, from "balking" to blackmail. It's important to note that with a single power to contend with, continuous or sustained tactics to counter US strength are unlikely. There will be shifts and rearrangements until new balances are struck. Pejorative references to "Old" and "New" Europe, for example, are counterproductive. They only serve to demonstrate inflexibility and increase disaffection toward the US leadership.

Where direct opposition to US hegemony fails or is impractical, there are various forms of accommodation that may be adopted. Understanding that each nation has its own interests to follow, "accommodation" is a term of wide and flexible definition. One strategy is to call in the "debts" of past cooperation. That may lead to modification of the original demands by the US. "Bandwagoning" is Walt's term for a nation agreeing to a US policy, but with an eye to later possible challenges. It's a rare tactic, but one used effectively in the proper circumstances. "Regional balancing" is another form of manoeuvering. It was used successfully during the Cold War, and lingers in some of today's national alignments. A more blatant form of accommodation is the use of "penetration" of domestic politics. Here, Walt treads on shaky ground as he depicts the extensive lobby groups run by Israel and India. These forces have gone beyond seeking accommodation to actually guide US policy-making. His recommendation to banish these groups as inimical to US long-term interests will certainly lead to protest by vested interests. Walt further recommends the blatant and unhindered support of Israel in the Middle East is causing more problems than benefits. The US should cut Israel loose and strive to broker a new arrangement based on the establishment of a Palestinian nation.

Walt stresses a point often lost in discussions of US power and policy. It is a mistake, he notes, to think other nations resent or "hate" the people of the US. Except through the leaders they elect, the people of the US aren't held accountable for mistaken policies. The failures of successive administrations are regrettable, but the peoples of other nations generally accept the foundation of "good intentions" in US actions. What is needed, Walt suggests, is to prove that good intentions work. This can be accomplished by the US using its might with circumspection. "Offshore balancing", the solving of problems by negotiation with the might of the US present in the background, has been successful and should be applied more often. The present administration has abandoned "offshore balancing" in favour of a declaration of "preventive" war against nations it deems unaccommodating. This, in effect, is a declaration of war against the rest of the world. Instead of asserting its power, Walt argues, the US should assume a stance of playing "hard to get". Other nations should be welcomed in bringing problems to the US instead of the US intruding unilaterally. He calls this approach a "mature foreign policy".

Who will tame this powerful eagle? Chairs and whips are for lions, so something else must be applied. It is the ballot that will curb excess or foolishly applied power. Walt intends this book as a non-partisan prescription for improving the awareness of the US electorate. He notes that many of the problems in international affairs his nation is facing are of recent origin. It isn't too late to employ corrective action, but voters and their representatives must be better informed of the issues and how policies are irritating other nations with which the US must coexist. The title doesn't lie.

I purchased a very early edition of this book back in the 80's and you have to believe me, it changed my world. Sound, practical financial advice when you are starting out in life is an invaluable aid. I have since given away copies to all the young people I know as a graduation gift and like to think it has helped them start out on the right foot too.
I bought this update just to read Andy's insight into all the changes we are seeing in the financial arena and a quick review didn't disappoint me. I will finish reading it again cover to cover (OK I will skim some of it) by the weekend. After all when you are comfortably retired (fiscally and physically) you have time to indulge yourself with a good read.

Worthy and Entertaining

I'm pretty sure I have bought every edition of this book as it has come out, and this is no exception. Besides being the most entertaining book ever written on investing (faint praise on its face, but Tobias rivals Michael Lewis when it comes to being able to do this), the book is full of not so much financial how-to, like most such books, but financial wisdom, which is much harder to come by. Perhaps the greatest of these is: Trust No One. If you have earlier editions, there is not a lot of new text here -- it's definitely an update, not a revision.

Speaking of revisions, I do have a quibble about what appears to be a change in emphasis from earlier editions, in favor of putting a large percentage equities into retirement 401Ks; my quibble is that there is little or no mention of the more recent arguments against that (eg., Merton, Shiller; Merton, in particular, argues that for most people, that the downside risks of stocks make them too risky for retirement accounts, except for very young workers; according to this view, stocks are appropriate only once the you have reached your minimum safe retirement level of future income, taking into account Soc Security and other pensions. Until that point is reached, you should be invested in safe assets, like TIPS ladders and, eventually, annuities. This is so despite the fact that stocks are statistically more likely to outperform other investments; the problem is that there is a real possibility that they will under-perform, leaving you below your minimum required retirement amount. See Merton's article, "The Crisis in retirement Planning, Harvard Business Review 2014). Although Tobias mentions the 2008 crash, he seems to suggest that the recovery in equities since then has made up for that. Alas, for many people, it has not; moreover, equities are richly valued right now, which suggests that their historic performance is unlikely to be repeated for future generations of retirees. So as Tobias advises, "trust no one," or I would say, take with a grain of salt, even this wise and immensely enjoyable book

His 2nd Edition is even more helpful

This is the First Edition - his Second Edition has even more helpful information. Thankfully, it is written to be understood, in the straight-forward manner appreciated by folks who are seriously looking for a healthier way of life and/or how to prevent and survive cancer WITHOUT caustic chemicals, radiation and surgery. Oncologists tell their patients they can eat whatever they want to because they have no way of guaranteeing their conventional methods will "cure" cancer so what difference would it make what they ate? Actually, it makes a HUGE difference but you'd never know it from your doctor. The information in Killing Cancer - Not People is the result of many years of research and dedication to learning how to keep our bodies healthy in order to best prevent disease, and how to help our body heal itself as God intended - naturally. NOT "being a doctor" is actually an advantage when it comes to interviewing ordinary people who underwent conventional "cures" only to find their condition worsened, people who made the decision soon enough to seek an alternative treatment to drugs, real doctors and clinics who offer natural, non-chemical treatments, and then be able to compile his findings in book form to be shared with his fellow man. You cannot make an informed decision about your health unless you've "done your homework". This book should be #1 in your library if you're serious about healthy living. Factual and Detailed

Mr. Wright's book is quite detailed on this subject, and while it does not carry the bibliography you'd likely find from someone with a scientific or medical background, (Wright is not a doctor), the book almost always references his source, some of which comes from data derived from the net. Published internet data is no less true than printed data, but if you have a prejudice about this, don't buy it. In my view, Wright's book and message is very important for anyone seeking to prevent or heal cancer without chemo, surgery or radiation. His tone is a little caustic to the average American who doesn't take care of themselves, very caustic to the FDA and doctors who don't seem to "get it" that Nature truly heals, and drugs do not... so if you can't tolerate that tone, don't get it. But if you want to know the truth about what works to heal cancer and could potentially save your life, well, many folks in the know (like Bill Henderson for one), say it's the best book they've ever read on how to do it. Before I opened the first page, I was afraid of this disease. Now I think of cancer as no more threatening to my life and health than any other degenerative disease, and I've already implemented the prevention strategies into my every day lifestyle. If all Americans absorbed the same information and lived accordingly, we'd see our cancer stats plummet. I like the e-book option because you can type a search term into the document which is very handy, plus it costs less than used softcovers, from over at AmericanACI.org. I give it four out of five, because five for me, is perfection. (And the only book that deserves that, is the Good Book, at least in my book.)

Amazing, but...

The book is truly amazing.. However, please DO NOT read this book as a first one as you start your quest for alternative cancer fights or battle for your own or one of your loved one's life. Simply because Bob is so sure in what he preaches he isn't focused into explaining things in details to a reader, I mean he just doesn't want to spend much energy on persuading the reader into his beliefs.
For me it was totally OK because I have researched (and still am) the topic in numerous places, so for me Bob's book came as a beautiful, simple, easy to read reminder, check-list, call it what you like... But if it were the first thing to come into my hands, I guess I could have some doubts on some of teh topics. I would recommend reading Susanne Sommers' Knockout first and than going back to Killing cancer!
To leave no doubt, I definitely recommend Bob's book in everybody's library!
