An Excellent Book

Reading and learning about the founding fathers is a pastime of mine. I had previously read much about Thomas Jefferson including "The Real Thomas Jefferson" by Allison, Maxfield, Cook and Skousen; I found this book by David Barton to be of the same high caliber. He uses a very large amount of original source documents as evidence for his findings. I realized that revisionist history was being taught in our schools many years ago while raising my own children. My sincere thanks to David Barton and his researchers for exposing the educational fraud being perpetrated on this incredible founder, Thomas Jefferson. I highly recommend this book!

Jefferson Lies by David Barton

This is an excellent alternative to the progressive revisionist history we get from provisional modernists. Though Barton is obviously biased, so is modern day historical analysis and the current liberal media. Thomas Nelson stopped printing the book only because they were bought out by the secular Harper Collins Press.

I have read 2 books for Dr. Nilson, Design of Concrete Structures and Design of Prestressed Concrete. What differentiates Dr. Nilson's books from others' is his special way of verbalising concepts. Dr. Nilson's books take readers or engineers deep into the concepts. Also, Dr. Nilson mentions the background behind the code requirements. Dr. Nilson knows how to select the proper words to explain. I adhore his style. If you want to understand concrete design, read Dr. Nilson's books.

If you find yourself interpreting serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixations after a bit of a hiatus, this one's for you. Well-written. The author doesn't know, but I am a huge fan. I still re-read passages out of this book to my residents. I almost have it memorized.

The definitive guide

If you can only have one book on protein electrophoresis and interpretation, then this is your bible. If you run serum proteins or IFEs, then you probably already know of Dr. Keren, and if you are just learning than this is the most comprehensive source, not just for basic information on interpretation, but also to understand the whys and hows of electrophoretic techniques. I cannot recommend highly enough. I wish he would write a similar book on hemoglobins.

This book is well written and makes both an excellent learning tool and reference. The book serves as a virtual encyclopedia for everything electrophoresis; with content for gel, capillary, and free light methodologies. Even the experts among you will find information of which they are unaware.

I was lucky enough to attend two symposiums where the author spoke and can attest that the book is written in a clear and concise tone - just like Dr. Keren's lectures, only without the benefit of experiencing his charismatic and light hearted humor first hand.

The Ethics of Secular Humanism

At about the age of 23 I discovered for the first time that I had a mind. Previous to that, I had been more-or-less incapable of any sort of introspection. Smoking marijuana opened my unconscious mind and I felt like I was able to step outside of myself and see myself for the first time. I immediately started reading books other than adventure novels. One of the first authors I discovered was Eric Fromm. His thinking completely galvanized me. I thought that he had figured out all human problems, and all people had to do was pay attention. I knew essentially nothing about Freud, Jung, Marx, Nietzsche, and so on, and Fromm synthesized all of their thinking into a coherent system. Fromm championed the bogey-man of right-wing Christianity, namely secular humanism. The idea of which is that the foundations for value systems should be based on man’s autonomy and reason. In order to know what was good for man, one has to know the nature of man. Authoritarian ethics is an irrational system based on acquiring power over people. This strikes me as so self-evident that it’s incredible that it could arouse controversy. Fromm claims that one of the best tools for knowing human nature is psychoanalysis.

These days Freud’s ideas are commonly held to be erroneous, and some critics dismiss Fromm’s ideas as he relies upon ideas of Freud. This is nonsense. Freud was one of mankind’s greatest geniuses. While it is true that his motivations discoveries he made regarding human nature were physiologically clockwork, following the prejudices of his time, Fromm acknowledged this. Too completely dismiss Freud’s ideas on this basis would be like denouncing Kepler’s equations because he thought that planetary motion was caused by the “Holy Spirit,” or Newton’s theory of gravity because he explained it in terms of action at a distance.

Rereading Fromm forty some years later, I am astonished at the extent to which he and I think alike. No doubt, this is because I devoured his work at an impressionable time of my life. So I still think that his ideas should be taught in high school. One thing I’ve become convinced of over the years is that irrational devotion to dogma is most often the source of evil, whether the dogma is religious or political. Teaching young people to not enslave their minds to authoritarian dogma is simply sane.

Can there be an ethical system that does not rely on moral absolutes on the one hand or moral relativism on the other? Is there any other way? This book says yes and -- amazingly, brilliantly -- lays it out in a way that makes perfect sense. The only value we can know, the only value we need, and the only value that can have any real claim on us is OUR value, human value, and that is neither absolute nor relativistic. If this sounds absurd or offensive to you, skip this book. If you see the brilliance in it, you're in for a treat. I've read this book several times and can't get enough. Fromm is an underappreciated genius.

Between 1916 and 1925 Paul Klee (1879-1940) made some 50 hand puppets for his son, Felix, of which 30 are still in existence. For the heads, he used materials from his own household: beef bones and electrical outlets, bristle brushes, leftover bits of fur and nutshells. Soon he began to sew costumes. These characters and small works, do not pretend to be great art, but at the same time, they are superbly imaginative, sweetly reminiscent of Klee's relationships with his family, and beautifully illustrative of the artistic and social developments of the time. Readers will see the chronological proximity of Dada and Kurt Schwitters's collages in Klee's Matchbox Ghost; the German National caricatures one of the era's more ominous political types. An introductory essay tracks the work's links to other avant-garde puppetry and to Klee's sculptural works, and notes his connections to the theater. For their part, Klee's son Felix and his grandson Alexander tell the story of how the figures were created.

Magical context

If you like the work of Klee, this book will show a larger picture of
his life, family and times. The puppets are raw and made with whatever
was near. With a light hand, the political and social events
are added to give a feeling of where these were created in time.

These puppets seem very modern and ancient at once. So glad to have it in
my collection.

He writes occasionally for US-based Wine & Spirits Magazine, and has published in Nation's Restaurant News, En Route Magazine, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, Vines Magazine, and Wine Access Magazine, among others. Past books include Pairing Food and Wine For Dummies (Wiley, December 2012), and Sommelier Management (Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, Revised Edition 2013). John has appeared on CTV National News, Breakfast Television, The Morning Show, TVOntario, CityTV, and CBC TV and has been a regular guest on classical 96.3FM for many years.John also consults on restaurant beverage programs, from small neighbourhood operations to national chains.
