matter, energy and emptiness

This book is a fascinating analysis of the similarities between the ancient Buddhist concept of emptiness, so fundamental to Mahayana practice, and modern discoveries in Physics. These are areas of science and philosophy where Eastern and Western thought have converged in important ways. Their agreement is intriguing and unexpected, with dramatic societal and cultural implications. One of those implications is that the "materialist" view of reality found especially in the West is out-of-synch with the reality described by the West's own hugely successful quantum science. "Quantum Buddhism and the Higgs Discovery" explores this rift and the richness and interplay of the Eastern and Western ideas related to it. Graham Smetham's books are always valuable and fun to read, but this one is especially concise and insightful.

Quantum confusion

Smetham's book reads like a first draft - lots of repetition, confusion and excess detail in inappropriate places. I suggest he finds a good sub-editor who can tease the key ideas into a more reader-friendly format, then relaunch the book with a new title.

The Judaeo-Christian tradition has been held partly to blame for a negative attitude to creation - one that has legitimised the exploitative use of the earth's resources. Hilary Marlow explores some of the thinking in the history of the Christian tradition that has contributed to such a perception, before discussing a number of approaches to reading the Old Testament from an ecological perspective.

Through a detailed exegetical study of the texts of the biblical prophets Amos, Hosea, and First Isaiah, Marlow examines the portrayal of the relationship between YHWH the God of Israel, humanity and the non-human creation. In the course of this exegesis, searching questions emerge: what are the various understandings of the non-human creation that are present in the text? What assumptions are made about YHWH's relationship to the created world and how he acts within it? And what effect do the actions and choices of human beings have on the created world?

Following this close textual study, Marlow examines the problem of deriving ethical norms from the biblical text and discusses some key ethical debates in contemporary environmental theory. The book explores the potential contribution of the biblical exegesis to such debates and concludes by proposing an inter-relational model for reading the Old Testament prophets in the light of contemporary environmental ethics.

About the Author

Hilary Marlow is a Research Associate in theology and the environment at the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, St Edmunds College, Cambridge. She also teaches biblical Hebrew to undergraduates in the Faculty of Divinity and sometimes lectures on the biblical prophets for the Cambridge Theological Federation. She completed her doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 2007. This is her first full-length monograph. She has a longstanding and close connection with the Christian environmental charity A Rocha, and is currently on the operations team of the John Ray Initiative.

I am a somewhat judgmental and stubborn Democrat, but alas I picked up this book. It had me literally laughing out loud and was a wealth of information and facts. It is rare to read something so thought-provoking. Cupp and Joshpe clearly did their homework and did it well. I hope this gets the attention it "rightfully" deserves.

The Right Stuff

As someone who resents the intense polarization and "us-versus-them" mentality in American politics over the past 20 years, I found this book to be a surprisingly refreshing take on some common misconceptions about Republicans. I know too many people who are quick to reflexively attach "labels" to Republicans or Democrats, conservatives or liberals, without having the facts to support their arguments. I didn't think that a book with this subject matter could have me chuckling the whole way through, but it did. I'm betting that it's going to change some skeptical minds. At the very least, it'll improve the "quality" of political debates in coffeeshops across America by injecting more factual accuracy into the mix.

Like the authors of the book,I am a conservative living in New York. I find myself facing the many challenges that are expressed in each chapter. The book wittily addresses each stereo-type. Even if you disagree with right winged political beliefs- this book will make you laugh and maybe even remind you of somebody you know.

This is a great read for anybody and I recommend it to all!

Plum, Plummer, Plum Beautiful

Since the only review of this book, so far, is by someone who HASN'T read it, I thought I'd take the opportunity of voicing an opinion of one who has! My first thought upon starting the book was: At 600 plus pages, this would seem to be less a "memoir" and more a full-scale autobiography. But, memoir it is as Mr Plummer seems to be recounting his life not is strict chronological order, but as memories assail him while writing. One can almost hear his thinking: "Oh, I'd forgotten that! Well, it's just too good not to tell! I'll get back to the main "plot" in a minute!" The stories are amazingly entertaining (As one who, as a youth saw the "Ian Keith/Broadway Television Theater" moment I was thrilled to discover I hadn't just imagined the whole thing!). The history of the theater, and its decline (and triumphs) over the last half century, heartening and heart-breaking. The portrait of stars and lesser luminaries of, at least, the past four generations is enthralling. As to the writing: suffice to say Mr Plummer is almost as good a writer as he is an actor (he couldn't be AS good... he'd be Shakespeare!) If you love theater, read this! If you don't, read this and you will!

A terrific, literate and mesmerizing memoir

Mr. Plummer is a splendid writer who takes pains to reveal himself candidly and honestly, warts and all. For anyone interested in theatre in the last half of the 20th century, this is required reading. Though admirably frank about his own failings and failures, he retains a gentleman's charity when discussing others. About his various liaisons, he remains fairly discreet throughout. There is much to learn and even more to enjoy in this absorbing and beautifully written book.

Burnaby's 1694 Translation

This is the original English translation done by William Burnaby not long after the original Latin manuscripts were found in 1663. The translator was only 21 at the time. It is written in the style and spelling of the time, so is not totally accessible to a modern audience. Since this is a somewhat racy work, I also found that the sections that were considered pornographic were left in the original Latin. As you read through this work, you will come upon entire sentences, paragraphs, or even pages that are in Latin. Since I don't read Latin, I wasn't able to understand these sections; but since the pornographic parts don't interest me, I wasn't too offended. This is an interesting method of 17th century censorship. If you want the whole thing in English, you will need to read translations from the 1960's or newer.

There were many racy parts left in, but the translator did his best to make them acceptable. Given the strong homosexual theme, it was still considered very controversial.

It should also be noted that the original Latin is very fragmentary, and this as well as other translations have been filled with interpolations by others. I understand that the original manuscript left to itself would be too incomplete to make for a coherent story.

To me this work is interesting from a historical perspective; it shows that bawdy humor has always existed and probably always will. The supposed author, Petronius, lived during the time of Nero and was the ultimate party animal. He was an intimate friend of Nero. This book reflects that lifestyle and shows the decadence of the age.

This is not a book I am interested in reading again, even in a more modern translation, but now I can say that I have read it. There are no morals taught or great insights into the human soul; it is just a raunchy tale. If you do want to read this book, I would recommend a more modern translation.

The Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter

In the translation by Oscar Wilde. Supposedly. I first read it online in translation by Alfred R. Allinson published by Panurge Press in 1930.
At one point I was very much into reading the biographies of Oscar Wilde and recalled that he had boasted of reading Petronius in the original Latin but no word of a translation. So when I found a translation attributed to him I had to buy it. No publisher was listed as the volume had been privately published for subscribers only.
One verse in Allision's translation I noticed was identical to the same in Wilde's and as the Wilde version was also published in 1930 I smelled a rat. Here is the verse in question:

"Who had a pathic lust ,
With Delian vice accursed;
Who loves the pliant thigh,
Quick hand an wanton sigh;
Come hither, come hither, come hiether.
Here shall he see
Gross beasts as he,
Lecher's of every feather!:

Obviously no coincidence. Was Allinson just playing a joke or was he skittish in putting his name on such a seriously perverse book?

The novel (it is called the first novel) is wicked fun--but not for prudes as the above verse displays! Petronius uses the narrative of a Greek and his slave boy during a quest for sexual adventure to carry along his lengthy observations of Roman life of the times.
